Research Lab

Lab 1: Energy Lab

Here, studies related to biofuels are carried out. The main focus is on biodiesel. Works related to problems like increasing the efficiency of transesterification, purification of biodiesel, sourcing of oil from algae for making biodiesel and studies on heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification process are the main highlights. Studies on chemicals that can be used as fuel additives for biodiesel to increase its performance are also being carried out.
Sourcing oil from algae throws many challenges like identification of candidate algae suited to culture conditions, increasing the oil content in algae during cultures, harvesting of algae, extracting oil from them with less energy intensive techniques, scope of using the remnant algal biomass etc. These problems will obviously open up a wide range of research activities.

Lab 2: Environmental Research Lab

This Research Lab with facilities like HPLC, UV- Visible spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Turbidity & Conductivity meter functions as a central instrumentation facility that is used by all the researchers in TIST.
This lab also has a well-equipped Microbiology lab. The major focus of this lab centers around processing of plant fibres, studies on phyto remediation and different aspects of hydrochemistry.

Lab 3: Thin Film Lab

The thin film laboratory is equipped with DC sputtering unit, strain gauge and other related equipments. The division has been able to complete successfully some research projects with finical assistance from external funding agencies. The major research projects carried out in the division are:-
1. Sputter deposition studies on Nickel super alloy based specimens for thin film sensor deposition, GTRE-CARS (DRDO).
2. Studies on development of Multilayer Thin Film Sensors with high thermal stability, DRDO (ER&IPR).
3. Development of thin film strain sensor technology for hot section gas turbine engine components, DRDO (AR&DB).

Lab 4: Nanotechnology Lab

The Nanotechnology lab works on frontier topics in synthesis and application of nanomaterials. The major area of application is catalysis. Research focuses on porous material synthesis, immobilization of enzymes on porous materials, application of immobilized enzyme sensors, porous materials for photocatalysis, etc.
Major sponsored research projects carried out in the lab are :-
1. Development of tailored pore-size mesoporous materials as supports for enzyme immobilization., DST-SERC, Fast Track .
2. Metal nanoparticle incorporated mesoporous nanotitania with photo-catalytic applications, DAE – BRNS.
The lab is equipped with a Glass Body Multiple Autoclave Reactor System for hydrothermal synthesis of porous materials, a Xe-arc lamp light source photoreactor system and a high temperature H2 reduction reactor system.

Lab 5: Optoelectronics Research Lab

The optoelectronics research laboratory in the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology has state-of-art facilities in the area of Optoelectronics and Laser Instrumentation. We have completed two major projects:-
1. Design, Development and Technology Transfer of High Power Diode Pumped Nd:YAG Laser with Frequency Doubled output, DST (TSD)
2. Design and Development of Laser beam analyzer, DAE – BRNS.
TIST has developed a diode pumped Nd YAG laser with CW output power of 120 watt and pulsed output of 80W at 10 kHz with a peak power 1 MW. The design is fully indigenous and is expected to be first of its kind anywhere in India except in national research laboratories. The indigenously developed laser beam analyzer sponsored by the DAE-BRNS is unique equipment that can be used for the characterization of laser beams. We have also undertaken several student projects with practical applications including vibration measurements using Michelson’s Interferometer, Rotational Measurement using Sagnac Interferometer, Finger Vein Recognition, Nano Synthesis using Laser Ablation Method, Z-Scan Setup, Laser Doppler Velocimeter etc.

Lab 6: Energy Efficiency Evaluation Lab

An Energy Efficiency Evaluation Lab (E3 Lab) has been set up which focuses on the various power quality issues and their mitigation techniques. The department has played an active role in the energy conservation activities of the institute which helped it to bag the Kerala State Energy Conservation Award 2009 and Commendation Certificates 2011 and 2012. The Energy saving measures commended by Energy Management Centre includes:

  • Energy awareness among students
  • Solar powered computer laboratories
  • Electric Bike with Regenerative Braking
  • Solar powered LED lighting schemes
  • Promoting Energy Efficient Research Projects
  • Rain Water Harvesting
  • Biogas Plants
Lab 7: Variable Compression Ratio Fully Computerised Diesel Engine

Variable Compression Ratio fully computerised diesel engine commissioned at the M.Tech Thermal Lab serves as a research engine, providing accurate real time data. The compression ratio of this engine can be varied from 5:1 to 20:1 making it suitable to run on multiple varieties of fuels. It is provided with thermocouples, temperature, pressure and flow sensors, and it also houses a reliable data acquisition system which captures data online and stores the information for further analysis. The engine also caters to the curriculum requirement of being capable of measuring performance and combustion parameters with utmost precision.
Make – Kirloskar, BHP- 5HP, Variable compression ratio – 7:1 to 20:1, Cylinder – 1, Bore – 80mm, Stroke – 110mm, Type – Water cooled, Speed – 1500 rpm.


An ABB IRB 1410 articulated six axis servo controlled robot with a reach of 1.44 m, possessing repeatability of 0.05 mm at a total cost of Rs.19 Lakhs installed and commissioned on 21st March, 2014 by Dr. D. Babu Paul, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Rtd.) and Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala. The robot was procured under TIST Research Fund to enhance the research opportunities in multi-disciplinary areas, especially in Mechanical Engineering.
The departmental research is mainly focused on ‘Design and Development of End-Effectors for various components in machine loading’. In the curriculum, the Robotic laboratory experiments include Study of RAPID programming; Gripper based Pick and Place, Inspection and Sorting, Picking the components using vision camera, etc. By using the Vacuum Gripper the components with different size and shapes are picked from the conveyor and the predefined program palletize each component according to its size. Toc H Institute of Science and Technology is the only Engineering Institute having such a sophisticated advanced technology Robot in Kerala.

Lab 9: Agilent Wireless Technology Lab

The Agilent lab is configured for testing and evaluating electronic building blocks like Antenna, Subunits like Amplifiers, Oscillators, Mixers, Power dividers etc. limited to a frequency range up to 3 GHz with thrust on the mobile band. The lab is equipped with Network Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer and lab test Components like Dipole Antenna, Adaptors, Cables and Terminators.
The following experiments can be done in the Agilent lab:-
Antenna Testing: Drive the transmitting Antenna from the Network Analyzer source and feed the output from the receiver to the Network analyzer.
The lab can also undertake –
a) Rotate one antenna to get beam pattern
b) Antenna characterization through network analyzer to get S- parameters.
c) Similar S-parameter for any network.
d) Frequency and power divisions of active components like Mixer, Modulator etc.
The lab has additional facilities like Antenna Design Software and System Design Software.
