Association & Activities 2018-19

Technical Fest – TECH FOSS 2019

 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, Arakkunnam, in association with the Computer Society of India, organized a two day National Level Intercollegiate Technical Fest  ‘TECH FOSS 2019’ on 22nd & 23rd February 2019. This is the sixth event in the TechFOSS series. The mission is to promote the virtues of free software and to increase the awareness among the young generation regarding how each one can contribute to the open source arena.

Tech FOSS 2019 started with the launch session on 22nd February 2019. Prof.Dr.PreethiThekketh, Principal, TIST, inaugurated the technical fest. Dr.Babu John (Vice Principal), Dr.SreelaSreedhar (HOD-CSE), Dr.Deepa Elizabeth George (HOD-ECE), Prof.LathiKarthi (HOD-CE), Professors, faculty members and students from various departments were present during the inaugural session.

TECH FOSS EVENTS:

TECHFOSS 2019 aimed topromote open source usage among students. Two days hands-on workshops were conducted on three topics – PythonDjango, BlockChain(in association with ICFOSS– International Centre for Free and Open Source Software)and Designing. Two technical contests were organised – TechnicalQuiz and Debugging.

  1. BLOCKCHAIN WORKSHOP

Two days workshop on BlockChain, in association with ICFOSS, was conducted by Mr.Jerin A Mathews, Data Platform Engineer at Data Chain Inc., Chennai. The blockchain is unquestionably an ingenious invention which has created the backbone of a new type of internet.The workshop included everything for a beginner to understand the blockchain concept. The topics covered were – Blockchain basics & introduction to ethereum, what are smart contracts?, programming environment, Remix IDE, Metamask, MyEtherWallet, Solidity programming language, syntax, vairable basics, functions setters & getters, fixed size and variable size arrays, mapping, constructors, Sample smart contract app (lottery smart contract), and Implementing an ERC20 token.

Two-days hands-on workshop on designing was conducted by Mr.YadevJayachandran (Google DSC Lead @ TIST), a design enthusiast. The workshop aimed to impart the basic principles of designing and to introduce some of the amazing tools used to create the wonders in designing.The workshop started with the principles of designing (alignment, sizing and ratios), proceeded with an overview on colors and color combinations, typography and fonts, then discussed about UI and UX and how to handle both. Finally, the session introduced the types of tools (vector based, raster based and UI) and had hands-on session on various examples.

National Level Technical Quiz competition was conducted on 22nd March 2019, along with TECH FOSS event. 35 teams participated in the event. Prelims was conducted and shortlisted teams participated in the final round. Asst. Prof. Ceira Sara Cherian was the quiz master. Albin Xavier and Alvin Mohan of S6 CSE secured the first prize. Athul N Ullas and MuhammedRameez of S2, CSE secured the second prize. The winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates by Dr. SreelaSreedhar, HOD-CSE.

DEBUGGING

National Level Technical Code Debugging competition was conducted on 23nd March 2019, along with TECH FOSS event. 10 teams participated in the event. Prelims was conducted and shortlisted teams participated in the final round. Asst. Prof. Anuraj C K coordinated the event. Merin Anna Jose and Taniya Joseph of S6 CSE secured the first prize. Albin Xavier and Alvin Mohan of S6 CSE secured the second prize. The winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates by Mr. JishnuVijayan, CSE Alumni (2012-16 batch).

Student Learning Group

The students of CSE department came together to a form a learning-group to interact with each other and share experiences. Building such a community of communities/learning-groups linking each potential student from each classroom to the other in the same institution, linking that group with other groups, together learning new technologies, sharing ideas and implementing it, availing proper mentorship could give rise to more projects becoming game-changing products of the future, changing the face of our economy. The following events were conducted under this learning groups:

Inauguration of ASAP ASDC and Launch of CSI student branch & CSAT association activities 2018-19

ASAP ASDC student branch at TIST was inaugurated on 5th February 2019 by Dr. Saji Gopinath, CEO, Kerala Start-Up Mission (KSUM) & Director, IIITM-K, Technopark. The launch of activities of CSI Student Branch and CSAT – Computer Science and Engineering Student’s Association of Toc H Institute of Science & Technology for the academic year 2018-19 was inaugurated on the same day, by Er. C S Varghese, Secretary, Toc H Public School Society. Dr. K Varghese, Founder Director & Manager, Toc H Public School Society presided over the function.

International Conference on Bio-Inspired Computing and Applications (IBICA ’18)

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, Arakkunnam, Kochi, successfully conductedthe 9thInternational Conference on ‘Innovations in Bio-Inspired Computing and Applications’ from 17-19 December 2018. The conference was conducted in association with Machine Intelligence Research Labs (USA) which aimed to provide a platform for world research leaders and practitioners, to discuss the full spectrum of current theoretical developments, emerging technologies, and innovative applications of Bio-inspired Computing. Dr. Oscar Castillo, Senior Professor at Tijuana Institute of Technology, Mexico inaugurated the conference on 18thDecember 2018 at Toc H. Bio-inspired Computing is currently one of the most exciting research areas, and it’s  exceptional strength in solving complex real life problems is to be exploited intensely”, he said in his inaugural speech. Dr. Alex Mathew, President, Toc H Public School Society presided over the inaugural ceremony. In the welcome speech, Dr. K Varghese, Founder Manager and Director,Toc H Public School Society, urged the need to leverage the understanding of key principles, processes, and mechanisms in biological systems into design, engineering, and technological applications useful for mankind. Dr. Ajith Abraham, Director, MIRLabs, presented the theme of the conference. He talked on varied aspects of bio inspired computing technologies – the efforts to mimic things happening in biology and nature to solve real world problems. Er. C S Varghese, (Secretary, Toc H Public School Society), Dr. Florin Popentiu Vladicescu (University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania), Dr. Sheng-Lung Peng (National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan) and Dr. Preethi Thekketh,Principal, Toc H, felicitated the gathering.Dr. Sreela Sreedhar, HOD, CSE, proposed the vote of thanks.

The three day conference witnessed plenary sessions on “On the Wiener Index Spanning Tree Problem” by Dr. Sheng-Lung Peng, National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan, “Bio-Inspired Optimization of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems” by Dr. Oscar Castillo, Tijuana Institute of Technology, Mexicoand“New Computational Intelligence Techniques in Software Reliability Engineering” by Dr. Florin Popentiu Vladicescu, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania.

The conference proved to be a significant one where researchers from Europe, US, Africa, and Asia presented about 51 different papers, based on the topics like Fuzzy Logic, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Artificial Neural Networks, Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithms,Applications of Bio-inspired Computing etc. The proceedings of the conference will be published by Springer: Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing. The event was co-sponsored by KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment).

Short Term Training Program (Industry Internship) On ‘Basics Of Project Management”

Industry Internship training on ‘Basics of Project Management’ was conducted by Mr. Raphy P Varghese, CEO, gooseBerry.media, Technolodge, Piravom from 19th to 30th June 2017 for S2 students. This was a unique internship program to build Leaders for the Industry. The program included aptitude test, resume preparation, group discussions, mock interview, team formation, developing product idea, project management training in – UNIX and GIT commands, GIT – version control and project management, HTML5, CSS3, UI/UX, SEO/SMO basics, web hosting, idea pitching and product presentation. The students were divided into teams and the best performing teams were awarded.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, Arakkunnam, in association with the Computer Society of India, organized a one day intercollegiate technical event ‘ALL KERALA CSI STUDENT SUMMIT 2018’ on 17th March 2018. The chief guest of the day was Dr. Ricky Jacob (CEO, PaySack, Bengaluru). Mr. Pramod C Menon (Service Delivery Manager, Wipro Technologies Ltd., Kochi) was a special invitee. Events included Quiz Competition, Coding Competition, Project Expo and A-Frame VR Demo(Mozilla).

Social Outreach Program On Cyber Security Awareness In Association With Janamaithri Police At Schools:

Yadev Jayachandran of 2016-’20 batch along with faculty Ms. Panchami V had taken cyber security awareness sessions for the students and parents at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Mannathoor on 26th September 2017. Yadev Jayachandran of 2016-’20 batch along with faculty member Mr. AbinOommen Philip had taken cyber security awareness sessions for the students of St. Johns School, Vadakara, Kootattukulam on 31st August 2017. This initiative was in association with Janmaithri Police of Kerala State.

The topic was ‘Trends in Information Technology’, which gave an overview of latest technologies and guided the interested students regarding how they can start with.

Empowering Housewives In Computer Education:

NSS unit, CSE and IT departments of TIST, in association with CSI Cochin Chapter, conducted a two week free course on basic computer training for the housewives from 7th – 16th June 2017. The participants were trained in basic computer usage, Microsoft office and internet. They were also familiarized with smart phone usage, and at the same time, given awareness on the security aspects of the smart world. Those who completed the course were given certificates.

Distribution Of Ink Pens For Promoting Eco-Friendliness

The Dept. of CSE of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, in association with ‘KakkoorGrameenaVayanasala’, distributed ink pens to school students, as a first step towards eco-friendliness. The event on 3rd June 2017 was inaugurated by Sri. K M Gopi, Secretary, MuvattupuzhaTaluk Library Council. Assoc. Prof. SreelaSreedhar, HOD-CSE attended the event.

CSAT – The Computer Science and Engineering Students’ Association of TIST

CSAT is an active body comprising of the entire faculty and students of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. CSAT was inaugurated on 11th March 2005 by Prof. Jyothi John, Principal, Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara. The association takes initiative for the conduct of various technical sessions, workshops, seminars, inter/intra collegiate competitions etc. throughout the academic year to expose the students to the latest developments in the computer world and enhance their knowledge and awareness in the latest fields of computing. CSAT publishes biannual technical newsletter ‘Tech-E-Bytes’ for providing the students with a quick overview of the cutting-edge technologies in Computer Science. Our annual newsletter ‘Darpan’ gives a detailed report on the association activities and the glorious achievements of students and faculty.

Asst. Professor Leda Kamal and Asst. Prof. Abin Oommen Philip serve as the faculty coordinators. Ms. Sahana M Sherief of 2014-’18 batch  serves as the Secretary and Mr. Arjun Menon of 2015-’19 batch serves as the joint secretary of the association.

When it comes to protecting the environment, even the impact of a small bit of plastic used to make a ball pen can make a difference; also, the reality is that most ball pens are thrown away at the first sign of trouble or just lost after a single use thereby increasing the plastic waste. The Dept. of CSE of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, in association with ‘Kakkoor Grameena Vayanasala’, distributed ink pens to school students, as a first step towards eco-friendliness. The event on 3rd June 2017 was inaugurated by Sri. K M Gopi, Secretary, Muvattupuzha Taluk Library Council. Assoc. Prof. Sreela Sreedhar, HOD-CSE attended the event.

AKSHARA DEEPAM’ PROGRAMME AT FATHIMA MATHA HSS, PIRAVOM:

Department of CSE sponsored Mangalam daily for the next academic year, in support for ‘Akshara Deepam’ programme by Mangalam at Fathima Matha HSS, Piravom. This is an initiative to inculcate reading habits among the young generation. Dr. Varghese Paul, Dean, handed over the copy to student representatives of the school. Asso. Prof. Sreela Sreedhar (HOD) and Asst. Prof. Saira Varghese were present during the event which was held on 20th June, 2016.

MOTIVATIONAL SESSION ON “INDIAN DEFENCE SERVICE & CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGINEERING GRADUATES”:

An interactive and informative session on “Indian Defence Service & Career Opportunities for Engineering Graduates” was organized on 1st July, 2016 for the benefit of B.Tech students of all branches, who has a passion towards joining IDS. Capt. Aji P Mathew, Army Officer, Raiwala, Uttarakhand was the resource person. He shared his experiences as defence personnel. He also explained the different career opportunities within IDS and gave an overview of the different examinations to be cleared in achieving the same.

CSE STUDENTS OF TOC H INITIATES ‘NAKSHATRA VANAM’ AT CAMPUS

CSE students came up with the environmental support initiative ‘Nakshatra Vanam’ at their campus at Arakkunnam. Kerala Forest Department Retd. DFO Sri. S. Unnikrishnan initiated the programme on 6th August 2016, by planting a Neem tree sapling in the Campus. Toc H Environmental protection awareness session and a Quiz program were also conducted in accordance with this green initiative. The 27 trees representing the 27 birth stars have medicinal, social and aesthetic values, which helps purify the air, thereby maintaining a healthy and sound green ecosystem in the campus.   Details regarding these star trees were labeled and exhibited. Toc H Management Secretary Sri. K A Simon, Principal Dr. D Vincent H Wilson, Dean Dr. Varghese Paul, HOD Associate Professor Sreela Sreedhar and Assistant Professor Elsaba Jacob addressed the students.

OLD AGE HOME AND ORPHANGE VISIT

Students of CSE along with faculty members visited ‘Karunalayam’ old age home at Mamalakkavala, Piravom and ‘Sughadha’ Orphanage at Kolenchery in September 2016. They spent time with the inmates, distributed gifts for them and arranged ‘Ona Sadya’ for them. The visit was a valuable experience, as it gave an insight regarding the need to value the senior citizens of our family and society, despite isolating and excluding them to the old age homes. They returned with the satisfaction of brightening up at least a day for the elders and kids.

SOCIAL AWARENESS SESSION ON CYBER SECURITY:

CSE Department, in association with CSI Student Branch organised a one day social awareness session, “Be Net Safe”, on Information Security and Cyber Threat Awareness for high school students of St. George High School, Arakkunnam on 18th January 2016. The sessions and live demos on different threat scenarios were handled by M.Tech CS Data Security students, Mahima Mary MathewsRanjith R Bhat and Hridya Venugopal, along with Asst. Prof. Elsaba Jacob and Asst. Prof. Mima Manual. The event aimed to create a general awareness among the participants to safeguard themselves from falling victims to cyber crimes and IT frauds.
