J.C BOSE RESEARCH & ADVANCED STUDIES


J C Bose Centre for Research and Advanced Studies is a multidisciplinary research wing of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST), Arakkunnam, Cochin, with a commitment for excellence in fundamental and applied research.

 

The centre had a humble beginning in 2006 as Dept. of R&D. Realizing the need for a much greater emphasis on research; the department was soon converted as a research centre. The foundation stone was laid by the former President of India Bharat Ratna Dr. A .P. J. Abdul Kalam  in July 2009. The Centre is named in honor of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, a multi-faceted genius who had enacted the roles of a physicist, botanist, writer of science fiction and archaeologist.

  • The focus of the centre is to promote research in fundamental and applied sciences and to involve in entrepreneurship and social uplifting through its research and developmental activities.
  • The centre also envisages producing quality students who will be capable of undertaking independent research in areas relevant to industrial and technological development.

 

Mission


The centre aims at evolving an intellectual ground for propagating creativity, nurturing scholarly minds for innovative breakthroughs, engaging in time – bound research for faster productivity in areas of energy, environment, and material and health sciences, in liaison with progressive research institutes, industries and universities. Our intuitive approach commits to ameliorate the humanity through general advancement of research, education and technology outreach, making this world a better place to live.

 

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CENTRE

 

  • In 2008, the institute was recognized as an approved research centre to have interaction with Anna University, Coimbatore for collaborating research programme in the areas of Humanities & Science, Engineering & Technology and Management Studies
  • A MoU has been signed with Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre, Bergen, Norway and their Indian counterpart Nansen Environmental Research Centre, Kochi and joint projects have been proposed.
  • In 2009, the Pollution Control Board of Kerala State conferred “B-Grade Commercial Certificate” to the Environmental Science Division empowering the Centre for Water testing.
  • The Bose Centre conducted a National Seminar on “Horizons in Thin Film Technology- HTFT 2011” on 20th and 21st January 2011. 
  • In 2012 the centre was registered with Department of Scientific and Industrial Research         (DSIR) and approved as “Scientific and Industrial Research Organization” (SIRO).

ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE CENTRE


  • The department was successful in developing a rubber based adhesive with properties comparable to that of commercially available branded products.
  • We could produce biodiesel that could be used in unmodified engines without blending.
  • Ordered mesoporous silica with viable pore – diameter were successfully synthesized for enzyme immobilization. Immobilized enzymes retained 60-70% activity of free enzyme.
  • Mesoporous titania was synthesized via hydrothermal route and were applied in photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The activity was comparable to standard titania photocatalyst.
  • Mechanical system for the Development of Laser Beam Analyzer designed, fabricated, assembled and tested.
  • High Power Diode Pumped Nd:YAG Laser,  designed, fabricated and  tested for 50W CW power
