M.Tech Electronics with Specialization in VLSI and Embedded Systems


One of the two MTech courses in The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is MTech in Electronics with specialization in VLSI and Embedded systems. The program is approved by AICTE, and is affliated to Cochin University, Cochin.

 

The need for miniaturization of Electronic Circuits has grown multifold over the years. Department of Electronics of Govt of India is giving a major thrust to indigenization of electronic components, Designs and manufacturing in India rather than depending on the imports (www.deity.com/esdm). Based on these facts, TIST feels that a major thrust should be given to the students to work on the labs, design flows and innovative embedded systems. The course focuses on VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), where the engineering concepts to design a specialized IC in Digital Domain and in Analog domain is taught. The Advanced VLSI LAB of the Institute boasts of IC Design tool suite from the Global EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tool leader Cadence. The students thus gets an exposure to industry like design flow in the Institute itself. The design flows which a student could work are not limited to Front end and Back end flows, HDL (Hardware Description Languages), System Architecture, Physical Designs, RTL to GDSII flows, and System on a Chip (SoC).

 

The core of Embedded Systems is the use of Microcontrollers, RTOS and FPGA boards. The advanced Lab of the Institute has the necessary platforms to build an embedded system. FPGA boards are based on the FPGA Industry leader Xilinx. The boards are capable of rapid prototyping. Students thus could build and play with Advanced Microcontrollers, Real Time Embedded Systems, Advanced Embedded System Design and System on a Chip. The stand-alone tools like MATLAB, LAB View enhances the system integration and design capability of the labs.

 

Eligibility:


i) B.Tech or equivalent Degree /AMIE/AMIETE in Electronics & communication Engg/Electronics Engg and Instrumentation with a First class (60%) from any recognized University or Institution.

ii) A valid GATE score in Electronivs & Communication Engineering.

iii) If sufficient numbers of candidates are not available in category (ii) candidates with GATE score in INSTRUMENTATION,ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGG or ELECTRICAL ENGG will be considered.
