NSS (National Service Scheme)
Year of Beginning : 2011
The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are :
- understand the community in which they work
- understand themselves in relation to their community
- identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
- develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
- develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
- gain skills in mobilising community participation
- acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
- develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- practise national integration and social harmony.
The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to ‘/other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines/on the belief that the welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

NSS Volunteers of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology Bring Smiles with Pothichoru Drive
The NSS Unit No. 586 of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology once again demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by organizing a meaningful food distribution drive at Taluk Hospital, Piravom. The initiative, held as part of the unit’s ongoing community service activities, involved the preparation and distribution of pothichoru packets to patients and their caregivers.
The volunteers worked together from the early hours to carefully prepare nutritious meals, ensuring that every packet was packed with care and compassion. The food was distributed to numerous patients and bystanders, many of whom expressed heartfelt gratitude for the gesture. This simple yet impactful act not only helped meet an immediate need but also conveyed a powerful message of empathy and solidarity.
This activity aligns with the vision of NSS to nurture socially conscious individuals who are dedicated to serving society. By taking part in such initiatives, students learn the values of teamwork, leadership, and selflessness while creating a meaningful connection with the community.
Faculty members and coordinators praised the volunteers for their active participation, emphasizing the importance of sustaining such efforts to build a culture of giving back. The event stood as a testament to the NSS motto, “Not Me, But You,” inspiring both volunteers and recipients alike.
Through initiatives like this, the NSS Unit of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology continues to lead impactful outreach programs, encouraging every member of the college community to be a beacon of positive change in society.

The NSS Unit 586 of Toc H Institute of Science & Technology successfully organized a Wheelchair Donation Programme on 22nd February 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. George Church Parish Hall, Arakkunnam

The NSS Unit of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) organized a meaningful social awareness activity titled “Wall of Awareness” on 22 February 2026 at Mulanthuruthy Private Bus Stand.
Your Hunger, Someone’s Hope – NSS Fundraising Activity
On 7th February 2026, NSS Unit 586 of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organized a Snacks Stall as part of Mudra Arts Fest 2026 with the meaningful motto, “Your Hunger = Someone’s Hope.”
HANDING OVER OF COLLECTED PLASTIC TO HARITHA KARMA SENA : 23/1/26
A total of 140 kilograms of plastic waste, collected by NSS volunteers, was handed over to the Haritha Karma Sena representatives for proper segregation and environmentally safe disposal. The handover was carried out following the completion of the plastic collection drive conducted in the Arakkunnam region.
Plastic Waste Collection Challenge
As part of the State-Level Plastic Waste Collection Challenge 2026, organized by the University NSS Cell in association with the Natural Resource Protection Force (NRPF), NSS Unit 586 of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) conducted a Plastic Waste Collection Challenge on 18th January 2026.
The programme was carried out in the college campus and the surrounding locality, with the objective of promoting cleanliness, environmental awareness, and responsible waste management practices.
The initiative aimed to address the issue of plastic pollution by actively involving NSS volunteers in community service. Prior to the activity, volunteers were briefed on the harmful effects of plastic waste and the importance of proper segregation and safe handling during the collection process.
Volunteers were divided into groups and systematically covered the college campus, nearby roads, common areas, and surrounding localities. Discarded plastic materials such as bottles, carry bags, wrappers, and other single-use plastic items were collected with dedication and teamwork. The activity also helped in creating awareness among students and the local public regarding the need to reduce plastic usage.
The Plastic Waste Collection Challenge contributed significantly to improving the cleanliness of the campus and its surrounding locality. The programme strengthened environmental responsibility, teamwork, and social commitment among the volunteers, truly reflecting the spirit of NSS and its motto, “Not Me, But You.”

JEEVADHARA 2025 – A Blood & Stem Cell Donation Drive Organized by NSS Unit No. 586
The NSS Unit organized a Blood Donation Camp and Voluntary Blood Stem Cell Donation Registration Drive under the title “JEEVADHARA 2025” on October 22, 2025, at Amrutham Hall, TIST, in association with the IMA Blood Bank and DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donors Registry.
Road Cleaning
The National Service Scheme NSS Unit No. 586, in collaboration with the Road Safety Club, organized a “Road Safety and Roadside Cleaning Program” on 23rd September 2025 at Kadaikkavalavu.

A Sapling for a Friend
NSS Unit No. 586 of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organized the environmental initiative “ചങ്ങാതിക്ക് ഒരു തൈ (A Sapling for a Friend)” on 1 August 2025 at Amrutham Hall under the Haritha Keralam Mission. The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness while strengthening friendship and social responsibility among NSS volunteers through a symbolic sapling exchange.
The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 50 NSS volunteers, each bringing a sapling to exchange with another volunteer as a pledge to nurture nature and contribute to a greener future. This unique activity encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices and highlighted the importance of individual responsibility in environmental conservation.
A special awareness session on “Conservation of Nature – Save Green Life” was delivered by Ms. Mary Dhanya, Faculty, Department of Civil Engineering, TIST. The session emphasized the need to preserve natural ecosystems and inspired students to adopt practical measures for protecting the environment in their daily lives.
The programme successfully combined environmental education with meaningful social interaction, creating a positive atmosphere of learning, friendship, and collective action. Volunteers actively participated in the sapling exchange and pledged to care for the plants they received, reinforcing the message that small individual efforts can make a significant impact on the environment.
The initiative concluded with renewed enthusiasm among the participants to protect nature and promote sustainable living. “A Sapling for a Friend” effectively reflected the spirit of NSS by encouraging students to build lasting friendships while contributing towards a greener and more sustainable future

International Day Against Drug Abuse
NSS volunteers of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) actively participated in the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse organized by the NSS Ernakulam Region of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) at AISAT Engineering College, Kalamassery, on 26 June 2025. The programme aimed to create awareness among young people about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promote a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. D. Shivaprasad, Vice-Chancellor of KTU, who emphasized the vital role of students and NSS volunteers in building a drug-free society through continuous awareness and responsible leadership. More than 200 NSS volunteers from various colleges across Ernakulam district participated in the programme.
The event featured a variety of awareness activities, including a Drug-Free Pledge, an energetic flash mob, cultural performances, an expert-led awareness session on the physical and psychological consequences of substance abuse, and a public rally carrying anti-drug messages. These programmes effectively engaged participants and strengthened their commitment to preventing drug abuse.
The observance successfully reinforced the importance of making informed and healthy life choices while encouraging students to become ambassadors of awareness within their institutions and communities. The programme reflected the core values of NSS by promoting social responsibility, youth leadership, and collective action towards building a drug-free society.

Self Defense Workshop
A workshop was conducted on “Self Defense Techniques” for the final year girl students and fifth-semester electronics branch students by the Internal Complaint Committee ( ICC) and the Anti Sexual Harassment Cell and Women’s Cell in association with NSS.
The resource person was Mr. Mark Antony who is a K.A.I certified National coach Karate Instructor with II Degree Black Belt. The session was conducted in Ramanujan Hall at 3.00pm on 18/11/21.
Nearly fifty students participated. In the session, the girl students were shown simple techniques through which they could defend themselves in case of any sort of assault. Boys also attended the session so that they could pass on the information to their families and friends.
2018 -2019
In a commendable act of social service, the NSS volunteers of TIST, along with the Kerala Action Force decided to build houses for two poor families in Choornikkara Panchayath. The foundation stone was laid by Pathmashree Dr. Tony Fernandez on 16.11.2018.
TIST NSS Unit conducted deworming campaign on 25/10/2018 and Albendazole tablets distributed and administered to the students in the college. 250 students participated in this campaign
Volunteers of TIST NSS Unit had taken up the relief and rescue operations on war-footing from 16/8/2018 to 1/9/2018 and actively participated in the flood relief activities in critical circumstances. Everyone took part in different activities like collection of materials, packing, loading, visiting relief camps, volunteering etc. The timely coordination kept the volunteers inspired and motivated to extended all possible help to the victims.
TIST NSS Unit conducted 6 Day Survey Camp from 27/08/2018 to 1/9/2018 in collaboration with the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) and NSS Technical Cell at Choornikkara Panchayath aimed at visiting the flood affected areas and taking a survey on the amount of damage. All NSS volunteers along with the Programme Officer, Mr. Fabil Varghese, actively participated in the camp.
