Activities of Women’s Cell 2023 – 24
International Women’s Day celebration, Venue: Ramanujan Hall

The International Women’s Day was celebrated on 6th March 2024. The resource person was Mrs. Nija Benny, Founder and CEO, Live Life, The Mind Studio. She is an International certified Life coach, psychologist, memory and brain development trainer, blog writer and television anchor. She is best known by her media name Anna Melo. She has two master degrees in psychology (MSc) and Engineering( M Tech) and a post graduate diploma in psychotherapy and counseling. Nija’s style is highly enthusiastic and motivational, guaranteed to make people realize and recognize their potential. She has anchored TV shows like Asianet, Mazhivil Manorama -Valkkanadi,Taste Time chat, Innathe Cinema.

She spoke on awakening the Inner self. It was an interesting session which was well liked by all. Nearly 100 students and staff attended the session.

Gender Equality

A Session on “Gender Equality” was held for the first year students of Electronics, Information Technology and Robotics on 14th Nov 2023 at Ramanujan hall from 10 am to 12 pm.It was jointly organized by Women’s Development Cell, ICC-Internal compliance committee and DIWA- Dynamic and Innovative Women’s Association. The session was handled by Mr. Reji P. Mathew who has several years experience as a trainer and educator. It was a informative session in which the various aspects of gender equality was discussed such as the origin of gender issues, the mindset of people and so on. The various laws protecting women was also discussed. He concluded the session by asking the students to respect each other irrespective of their gender and if a change is to happen in the society it should start with them.

“How to handle Stress and Depression”

A session on ‘ How to handle Stress and Depression’ was conducted for the first year students of Computer Science on 13th October at Tagore hall from 2.00 to 3.00 pm.

Dr. Jyothi Madhusoodhan Nair, Consultant Psychiatrist, Welcare hospital handled the session on the causes of Depression and Stress, how it affects the daily routine and when to seek help. She also spoke on the topic of suicide. Overall it was an informative session

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

21st June 2023, Timings- 9.00-10.30am

VENUE: Yoga Room, Amarthya Sen Hall

As part of the International Yoga Day on 21st June 2023, an Yoga session was held for the students of Robotics and Automation by the Women’s Development cell. The session was handled by Mrs. Benila Anoop, lab instructor, IT department, who is an experienced yoga instructor.

Different forms of Asanas were shown to the students whereby they could improve their concentration, develop positivity, good posture and healthy habits. Breathing exercises were also shown to the students.

It was a good and beneficial session with the students expressing their gratitude to the resource person.

Activities of Women’s Cell 2021 – 22

Nirbhayam Launch

A Session on “Gender Equality” was held for the first year students of Electronics, Information Technology and Robotics on 14th Nov 2023 at Ramanujan hall from 10 am to 12 pm.

Women must download this app on their Android phones and submit their details. By implementing this, once an emergency situation occurs, they will be able to quickly receive information at the police control room after hitting a button on this Nirbhayam app.

Personal Health

A session on “Personal Health” was conducted for the first-year female engineering students on 17th December 2021at 1.20 pm at Tagore Hall. It was organized by the Information Technology department in association with the Women’s cell and the Department of Applied Psychology and Counseling.

The session was handled by Dr Reena Madhu, a women cell member and psychologist. In the session topics related to physical health, mental health, personal hygiene, the importance of nutritious food, session regular exercise were covered. Nearly 80 students participated in the session. Towards the end, there was an interactive session in which the students cleared their doubts.

Self Defense Workshop

A workshop was conducted on “Self Defense Techniques” for the final year girl students and fifth semester electronics branch students by the Internal Complaint Committee ( ICC) and the Anti Sexual Harassment Cell and Womens Cell in association with NSS.

The resource person was Mr. Mark Antony who is a K.A.I certified National coach Karate Instructor with II Degree Black Belt. The session was conducted in Ramanujan Hall at 3.00pm on 18/11/21.

Nearly fifty students participated. In the session the girl students were shown simple techniques through which they could defend themselves in case of any sort of assault. Boys also attended the session so that they could pass on the information to their family and friends.

ORIENTATION

Date : 5/11/21, Timing ; 3.00 – 3.45 pm, Venue : TIST Girls Hostel

An orientation was given to the final year inmates of the girls hostel by Dr. Deepa Elizabeth George, convenor of the Women’s cell.

She spoke about the formation of the new cell “Internal Compliance Committee” ICC under the women’s cell wherein any sort of gender bias or injustice faced by the girl students or women staff of the college can be reported so that necessary steps can be taken to avoid such incidents and spreading awareness about gender equality among all.

The convenor also stressed that they can approach the women cell members if they face any problem. One should not remain quiet nor should one not get scared. She also spoke in length about the functions of the women’s cell. The final year inmates were asked to orient their juniors about the Women’s cell and ICC. She was accompanied by Dr. Reena Madhu, women cell member and girls hostel in charge.

Overcoming stigma related to Mental Illness

Date: 1/11/21, Time: 7.30- 9.00 pm (Online mode)

An online session was handled by Dr. Reena Madhu, member of the Women’s cell on 1st November on  “How to overcome stigma related to Mental Health”. It was conducted as part of mental health day. The audience consisted of students, homemakers, and mental health professionals.

She spoke about the stigma that is associated with mental illness and the need to ensure that individuals with mental health difficulties must be treated equally without any discrimination. She also stressed the importance of maintaining good mental health.  After the session, there was an interactive session with the participants wherein all the queries were answered to

  • International Women’s day was celebrated on 10th March with a session on the 2021 Theme “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid -19 World”. Aswathy Venugopal, Dream-maker, and founder at Avasarshala delivered the Session.

  • Organized a session on “Stress Release Tips for Facing Entrance Exams amidst COVID-19 Lockdown Blues” on 4th July 2020 for Plus two students aspiring for engineering and medical entrance exams during the COVID-19 period.

  • Organized a session on “Mental Health Challenges and Issues in Post Lockdown – Expanding New Horizons” on 27th July 2020 for the post-graduate students of Psychology and English, Jain University, Kakkanad campus.

  • Organized a session on “Engineering and its scope and excitement “ on 30th July 2020 for Plus one student of Global Public school, Ernakulam.

  • Organized a session on “Introduction to Yoga on Health and well-being” was organized on Sept 12, 2020, for all staff and parents of students of TIST.

  • Organized a session on “Exploring Opportunities for women in Engineering “ in association with WIE, IEEE on 5th Dec 2020.




Activities of Women’s Cell 2019 – 20


  • Organized two weeks computer training program in “Empowering Women in Computer Education” for housewives from July 1-15, 2019. 25 participants from the nearby locality took part in the training program.
  • The 2019 IEEE, Women In Engineering(WIE) summit was organized at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology on 21,22, and 23 July 2019. The three-day-long programs had various workshops that spread technical knowledge on image analysis, natural image process, cybersecurity, and Women in Entrepreneurship. There were 130 participants for the event from all over Kerala..

  • A workshop on “ Wing- Women Rise Together”, a capacity development program for women entrepreneurs by Mr. Jibin Jose, CEO, Flipmotion Technologies, was held on Oct 23, 2019, at CS seminar hall.

  • A mass thiruvathira of all girl students of S3 was held on Nov 1, 2019, in connection with Kerala Piravi celebrations

  • Women Empowerment and Entrepreneurship guidance workshop organized on 6th and 7th Feb 2020 by WING team( in association with Kerala Startup mission

  • Organized a session on ‘Reducing Stress in Women’ in the workshop on ‘Status of Women’ organized by Amballur grama panchayat on 18th Feb 2020




Activities of Women’s Cell 2018 – 19

 
  • Computer training for housewives was organized from 18/6/18 to 29/6/18.

  • Flood relief activity at SNDP school on 14/9/18 -As part of the relief program of the flood that devastated different parts of Kerala, a member of the Women’s cell conducted a counseling session for the students at SNDP school, Pallisery, Angamally which was badly affected in the floods. The individual counseling session was also given to the students, teachers, and staff of the school.

  • Study skills and Personality Development Session at Technical school, Thuruthikara on 5/10/18- A session on “How to study effectively” and Personality development was held for the students of 8th, 9th, and 10 standards. An individual counseling session was also given.

  • Yoga session for students of TIST on 16/11/18 – A session on Yoga for the students of TIST was held on 16/11/18 by a well-known Yoga practitioner, Mrs. Uma Jayakumar who has been in the field of imparting Yoga training for the past 35 years.

  • A session on Women’s safety was conducted by Sensei Dino Davis and Sempai Febin Paul, School of Martial arts, Kochi on 4/2/19 for girl students of TIST.

  • A session on Career guidance was conducted by IMS, Kochi on 4/2/19, jointly organized by the Women’s cell and MBA department.

  • Women’s Day celebration on March 8, 2019

  • Soft skill session for the girl students of TIST on 5/6/18 – A session on soft skill was conducted for the girl students of TIST by the Women’s cell in association with the TIST entrepreneurship cell. The session was handled by PRAYANA which specializes in providing soft skill training to students.

7th June- 16th June 2017 :

Computer Training for Housewives. A Ten-day Training in Computer was given to the Housewives of the Mulanthuruthy Panchayath in association with the CS dept.

21st June 2017  :

International Yoga Day was celebrated in TIST by the Women’s cell. Smt Sheeba Vinod, Yoga Therapist, International Hospital, Kochi handled the session. Staff and students of the college participated in the session

15th July 2017 :

Enlighten 2.0 was organized in association with IEEE WIE(Women In Engineering) student chapter of TIST, at St Ignatious HSS, Kanjiramattom for the 9th & 10th students on engineering orientation.

10th July 2017 :

Enlighten 2.0 was organized in association with IEEE WIE(Women In Engineering) student chapter of TIST, at St George school, Arakunnam for the 9th & 10th students on engineering orientation.

28th Nov 2017 :

Organized a one-day program on ‘Effective parenting skills’ for parents at SN school, Mamala.

20th March 2018 :

Visit Holy Cross Hospice, Perumpadappu, a center for terminally ill patients.

19th August 2016 :

“Interpersonal Relationship” session by Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla, Psychologist and Former Registrar, College of Nursing, Vellore was arranged for the Fifth-semester female students of B Tech and the faculty.

19thAugust 2016 :

“Interpersonal Relationship” session by Dr. Vincent H. Wilson, Principal, TIST, for Fifth-semester boys.

17thFebruary 2017 :

Due to the alarming rise in atrocities against women in public places, a general awareness program on  Self Defense was conducted for the  Girls in association with Kerala Police. The session was handled by three women trainers from the police department. The training module was designed and developed by Kerala Police for twenty hours duration to empower women physically and mentally. Fifteen girls from each dept attended the program and participated in the practical session.

8thMarch 2017 :  As part of the Women’s Day Celebration, the Women’s Cell of TIST organized a Talk on NIRBHAYA: Women’s Safety which was conducted by MTech students of CSE  for the B Tech, M Tech, and MBA female students on 8th March 2017. It was a two-hour session with emphasis on women’s safety, cyber safety, live videos regarding cyber abuse cases and the steps to be taken in case of emergencies. Nearly a Hundred female students participated in the informative session.
