IETE (Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers )

The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) is India’s leading recognised professional society devoted to the advancement of Science and Technology of Electronics, Telecommunication & IT. Founded in 1953. The IETE is the National Apex Professional body of Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Science and IT Professionals. The Institution provides leadership in Scientific and Technical areas of direct importance to the national development and economy. The IETE Students Forum (ISF) at TIST was formed in 2013. From then, this chapter has been active and has conducted a number of conferences & workshops. Currently there are more than 200 student members and 10 corporative members in the chapter.

Activities of 2024-2025
“ELOQUENCE: Mastering Communication Skills for Career Success”

On October 18th, 2024, the Department of Electronics Students Association (ELECTRAA), in collaboration with IETE student Forum (ISF at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, hosted a session titled “ELOQUENCE” led by Ms. Sweta Sheriene Babu, Ms. Lumiya C.K., and Mr. Muhammed Saqith from Jubeerich Academy. Aimed for ECE and Robotics and Automation students, the session covered essential topics such as clear expression of thoughts, language skills for professional growth, interview techniques, and public speaking. Overall, the session equipped students with vital communication skills to enhance their professional interactions and contribute to their career development.

Webinar on “Exploring Medical Devices: An Introduction and Career Opportunities”

On 18th October, 2024, the Department of Electronics Students Association (ELECTRAA), in collaboration with the IETE student Forum (ISF) at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, hosted an insightful session titled “Introduction to Medical Devices and Career Opportunities.” Led by Anandhu Shyam, Program Manager in Med-Tech, the session was attended by students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Robotics and Automation programs. Anandhu emphasized the critical role of medical devices in the healthcare industry, highlighting their importance in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating medical conditions. The discussion covered various classifications and categories of medical devices, as well as the diverse career opportunities available in this rapidly evolving field. The session provided valuable insights into how advancements in medical technology can significantly improve patient outcomes and enhance healthcare quality.

Technical talk in collaboration with the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and the Department Association, ELECTRAA.

On 22nd August 2024, the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department hosted a guest lecture by Professor Dr. A. Beno, Associate Professor Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering, The lecture, titled “Communication Technologies in Real-Time Applications,” was organized by ELECTRAA in association with the IETE Students’ Forum of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology.

Professor Dr. Beno discussed the evolution of communication technologies, from traditional telephony to IoT and 5G networks, and their impact on real-time applications such as telemedicine and autonomous vehicles. He emphasized the importance of the frequency spectrum in communication and addressed the challenges posed by RF radiation on human life. Emerging trends, including antenna development and its role in real-time communication, were also highlighted.

Technical Session on
Communication Technologies for Smart grid systems

On March 27th, 2024, the Electronics and Communication Robotics and Automation Students Association of the Department of Electronics, in collaboration with ISF Toc H, organized an expert lecture on “Communication Technologies for Smart Grid Systems” for final year BTech Electrical and Electronics students at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology. The session, held from 1:10 PM to 3:00 PM, featured Dr. S. Perumal Sankar, Professor of the ECE Department, who discussed the integration of communication protocols like PLC, RF, and cellular networks in smart grids. The lecture also explored the role of IoT and edge computing in enhancing real-time data analytics and grid resilience, and highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology in enabling autonomous grid control and dynamic demand response. This event fostered knowledge exchange and collaboration, contributing to the understanding of smart grid communication technologies’ challenges and opportunities.

Webinar On   Opportunities In VLSI / Semiconductor Industry

On March 16th, 2024, ELECTRAA and ISF Toc H, in collaboration with the Department of Electronics at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, hosted a webinar titled ‘Opportunities in VLSI/Semiconductor Industry.’ The session, led by P. Narasimha, a Physical Design Engineer and Trainer at Takshila Institute of VLSI Technologies, covered essential aspects of the semiconductor industry.

Participants, totaling 60, gained insights into VLSI job eligibility, Takshila’s courses, placement opportunities, and core job prospects. The discussion included IC chip design and verification concepts, enhancing participants’ understanding of VLSI engineering processes. A comprehensive Q&A session concluded the event, allowing attendees to seek further clarification.

This collaborative initiative provided valuable knowledge and skills essential for careers in the semiconductor industry, underscoring the credibility and depth brought by ELECTRAA and ISF Toc H’s involvement.

National Conference On Information Communication & Intelligent Systems (NCICIS – 2023)

The National Conference on Information Communication & Intelligent Systems (NCICIS – 2023) was conducted by Electronics and Communication Engineering department of Toc H Institute of science and Technology in association with Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers –Kochi center from 23rd June 2023 to 24th June 2023 at Toc H Institute of science and Technology-Arakkunnam, Ernakulam, Kerala. This conference provided a perfect platform for the researchers and experts to disseminate their new applications of Contemporary Engineering and Technology and the implementation of the innovative systems.  

Conference Highlights:

Inaugural function: In the Inaugural session of NCICIS 2023on 23rd June 2023, Dr. Alex Mathew, President of Toc H Public School Society , delivered the Presidential Address. Mr. P Krishnakumar, Secretary of IETE Kochi Centre, provided an overview of NCICIS.

Chief guest: The honorable chief guest Dr. S. Vasudevan, Director NPOL, delivered the Inaugural Address. Dr Preethi Tekkath, Principal TIST and Mr. M.N Narayanan, Chairman of IETE Kochi Centre, Rtd Expert Planning Officer at Oman Telecom Co, felicitated the conference.

Key note Addresses: The Guest of Honour, Dr. Vishnu Srivastava, an Ex Emeritus Professor at AcSIR, Ex- Emeritus scientist (CSIR) delivered the plenary outstanding talk on “ THz Technology for ultra-broadband wireless communication” .

Technical Sessions: The conference had different technical sessions encompassing various aspects of information technology and telecommunications. These sessions allowed participants to delve deep into specific topics, such as THz Technology, IoT, networks and artificial intelligence in telecommunication.

Research Papers: Forty six research papers were presented, disseminating the cutting-edge developments in their respective fields. Papers covered subjects like IoT, robotics, bio medical application and microwave in telecommunications.

Industry Exhibits: The conference highlighted an industry exhibit area where KELTRON  showcased their products and services. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the latest technological advancements and engage with KELTRON experts.

Networking Opportunities: NCICIS-2023 emphasized the networking among the participants. Different sessions, discussions and events allowed participants to connect with peers, discuss and disseminate their ideas.

Valedictory session: The conference recognized outstanding contributions in the field through an valedictory ceremony. Researchers, innovators, and organizations were honored for their exceptional work and commitment to advancing the industry. The valedictory session commenced with a welcome speech from Dr. Deepa Elizabeth George, Execom Member of IETE Kochi Centre, Vice-Principal, HoD (DOE) at TIST, Co-coordinator of NCICIS 2023. Mr. M.N Narayanan, Chairman of IETE Kochi Centre and an expert in Planning (Retd) from Oman Telecom Co., as the Chief Guest for the event and Dr. Preethi Thekkath, Principal of TIST, presented felicitations during the session. Following that, participants gave feedback, and the session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. S. Perumal Sankar, Professor, DoE at TIST, Coordinator of NCICIS 2023.

IETE Kochi Centre, ISF Toc H and IEEE SB Toc H jointly organized World Telecommunication & Information Society Day celebration on May 16, 2022, in Tagore Hall, Einstein Block of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST). The celebration focused on the significance of celebrating WTISD in today’s era to bridge the digital divide between the young and the old. The programme started at 10:00 am with a prayer followed by a welcome address by Dr Deepa Elizabeth George, Vice Principal and HOD of the Department of Electronics.

The dignitaries on the dais were Dr Sudhakar Rao, IEEE Life fellow, Senior Technical Fellow, Northrop Grumman Space systems, Shri. M.N. Narayanan, Vice Chairman of IETE Kochi Centre, Dr A.Unnikrishnan, Former Chairman of IETE Kochi Centre, Dr Manju Bhaskar, Hon. Secretary of IETE Kochi Centre, Dr, Ansiya Eshack, Hon.Treasurer of IETE Kochi Centre and  Prof. Dr S Perumal Sankar, Dean of PG Studies, Toc H. The audience included ECE students of Toc H and ISF  Faculty Coordinators and Students from various colleges: Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology, KMEA Engineering College and MGM College of Engineering and Technology, IES College of Engineering, Thrissur.

Opening remarks and an introduction to the programme were given by Shri. M.N. Narayanan. He highlighted the fact that the senior citizens outnumbered 5-year-olds. He also mentioned the role played by digital technologies to the elderly to be independent on a physical, emotional and financial level.

Outstanding Scientist & Associate Director Retd. from NPOL, Former IETE Chairman: Dr A.Unnikrishnan expressed his good wishes to IETE and Toc H for organizing the WTISD celebration.

Hon. Secretary of IETE Kochi Centre: Dr Manju Bhaskar welcomed all the guests and expressed her gratitude on behalf of IETE and delivered the message from Secretary-General ITU and President of IETE on how the evolving technological developments enhance human lives.

Dr Ansiya Eshack, Hon. the treasurer of IETE Kochi Centre mentioned that a larger percentage of people started being accustomed to digital technologies especially due to the pandemic. She demonstrated and explained the ITU theme of the year 2022:” Digital Technologies for older persons and healthy ageing”. She emphasized the necessity of equipping the senior citizens with digital facilities such as the wearables to monitor their health, social media communication to stay connected with their loved ones and how the younger generation could help the elderly to make the best use of the technologies available around them.

The keynote address was given by Dr Sudhakar Rao, IEEE Life Fellow, Senior Technical Fellow, Northrop Grumman Space Systems, USA. He shared his research work and talked about Antenna Technologies for 21st Century Satellite and Ground Communications. He gave several examples of types and designs of antennas along with mathematical equations, graphs and diagrams. He also showed videos of AEHF Satellite Constellation, NASA SMAP and B2 Bomber Aircraft. It was followed by a Q&A session. He was felicitated by the college (TIST) with Kerala Houseboat and IETE Kochi Centre with a memento.

Finally, the awards were declared and distributed by Dr Manju Bhaskar. The best ISF award was received by ISF of KMEA Engineering College and the best emerging ISF was received by MGM College of Engineering and Technology.

 The programme wrapped up around 12:30 pm. The vote of thanks was given by Ms K P Manjulika, Executive member of ISF Toc H. It was followed by a photo session

This event aims to test the participant’s knowledge in Traditional General Knowledge, Constitution of India and Indian Polity, Geography, History, General Science, Computer and Technology, Economics, Current Affairs, etc. The event was conducted by the IETE Students forum, Department of TIST.

RE-DESIGN

RE-DESIGN is an innovation presentation contest. This competition aims to enhance the presentation skills and to bring out innovation in the students. This was conducted by the IETE Students Forum of TIST.

Industry Internship Program on Electronics Design and Technology by Digital Core Technologies Pvt.Ltd.

One day Industrial Workshop  was organised by IETE,TIST on 6th january 2020 for for S8, ECE students at Toc H Institute of Science and technology, Arakkunnam. The workshop was conducted by S. Thomas ,Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer and  design engineers from Digital Core Technologies Pvt.Ltd. One day Industrial Work shop on “Basic Electronics Circuits and Systems” from an Industrial perspective, Conducted by Practicing design engineers from DCT.It also aimed  to co-ordinate and facilitate students with genuine interest and aptitude to build a career in the domain of electronics system design and development. The students experienced  a good exposure and hands-on experience on basics of Electronics System/ Product design from an industrial perspective. It was a platform for students to prepare for acquiring a job / building a successful career in the core Electronics domain.

Talk  on “HOW TO EXCEED INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS”

ISF’s forum,TIST organized a Talk on “How to exceed Industry expectations” by on 29.11.2018 for the S1,S3,S5 and S7 students. The chief guest for the session was Mr.Kurien Thomas(Director Xtend Technologies Pvt. Limited  and Director TocH public school society). It was an interactive session and He urged the students on the need to equip themselves to become real professionals. He insisted the Students to engage in real-world learning by participating in classes and programs that simulate industry expectations

Sessions conducted by KELTRON

 A Seminar on “Embedded systems and IOT” was conducted by KELTRON(Govt. of Kerala undertaking) , in association with IETE on 15.01.2018 for S6 students of Electronics & Communication Engineering Department.The seminar gave the students an insight on Industrial Enhancement of Embedded systems and Internet of Things (IoT) based B.Tech projects.

A  Technical Talk on “Future trends in Electronics Industry” by experts from KELTRON (Govt. of Kerala undertaking)  was conducted on 16.01.2018 for S2 & S4 students of Electronics & Communication Engineering Department, in Association with IETE. Emphasis of the talk was more on interdisciplinary applications of technologies in electronics like Civionics, Medical Electronics, Mechatronics etc.

IETE QUIZ COMPETITION

 The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organized a quiz competition for S1, S3 and S5 students, in association with IETE & ISF for IETE student members on 20-09-2017. Altogether 66 student members participated for the contest. The competition composed of prelims and main section and selected candidates from the prelims were shortlisted to the mains and main section comprised with three rounds.The rounds were rapid fire, picture perception and a technical round. In total of 8 students were selected for the final round. Prizes were distributed by HOD Assoc.Prof. Deepa Elizebeth George. The program was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Shiyon P Johnson (Faculty Co-ordinator, IETE,ISF) and the students coordinators were Amrutha K R, K Indulekshmi,Shwetha Ann Ajith,Rajeev P R, Joel Leo, Archali Murali, Jaithra James & Freeda Philip.
