About the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology has been a significant contributor to national productivity and growth since its inception in 2006. Over the past 18 years, the department has achieved numerous milestones and continues to pursue excellence in education and research. The department’s commitment to quality is evidenced by its accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) until 2026, a recognition of its adherence to high standards and pursuit of excellence.
Currently, the department offers an undergraduate program with a capacity of 60 seats. The teaching staff comprises highly qualified professionals, with a majority holding advanced degrees from premier Indian institutions. This unique blend of industrial, academic, and research experience sets the department apart from its peers. The department is further distinguished by its state-of-the-art infrastructure, including advanced machinery and equipment, which provides students with hands-on experience and practical knowledge.
One of the department’s key achievements is the establishment of the only Daikin Center of Excellence (CoE) in Kerala. This initiative, in collaboration with Daikin Air Conditioning India Pvt Ltd (DAIPL), provides industrial training programs on campus, tailored to meet industry standards. To date, over 250 students have benefited from this program. The department also maintains strong connections with professional societies such as ISHRAE, ASME, IIW, and IEI, which have enabled the facilitation of in-plant training programs for students, even during challenging times such as the recent pandemic. Additionally, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with core companies have been instrumental in enhancing students’ technical expertise.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is dedicated to fostering an entrepreneurship culture among its students. Working in alignment with government policies, the department encourages innovation and entrepreneurial ideas through regular boot camps designed to motivate students towards self-sufficiency. The department is also in the process of developing an inclusive Fab-lab to further support students’ creative endeavors.
Research and development is another area where the department excels. Currently, there are over 10 active researchers working in various fields including effective heat transfer through nano-technology, composite bio-coatings, composites, super alloys, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The department has secured approximately ₹23 lakhs in research funding from various central and state government agencies such as KSCTSE, KTU-CERD, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, and SERB. There is a particular focus on research projects that address societal needs, and students, along with their mentors, have represented the department in various national and international venues, with several projects winning accolades in prestigious events.
The department has consistently maintained high placement rates for its students in both software and core industries. The strong alumni network of the department has been instrumental in further increasing the percentage of students placed each year. Feedback from recruiters consistently highlights the excellence, discipline, and perseverance of the department’s students.
