Faculty from the Mechanical Engineering Department Visit Aptiv

On December 13th, 2024, a group of faculty members from the Department of Mechanical Engineering embarked on an industrial visit to Aptiv, a leading global technology company specializing in automotive safety systems. This visit was part of the department’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the technical knowledge and industry exposure of its faculty.

The industrial visit provided a valuable opportunity for the faculty members to gain firsthand insights into Aptiv’s cutting-edge technologies and manufacturing processes. They likely had a chance to:

  • Tour Aptiv’s facilities and observe the production of automotive safety components.
  • Engage in discussions with Aptiv’s engineers and technical experts on the latest advancements in the automotive industry.
  • Learn about the real-world applications of engineering concepts taught in the classroom.

This industrial visit is expected to benefit both the faculty and the students of the Mechanical Engineering Department. The faculty members will be able to incorporate their learnings from Aptiv into their teaching, providing students with a more comprehensive and industry-relevant educational experience

Industrial Visit: Pallivasal Hydroelectric Power Plant

The S3ME class recently conducted an industrial visit to the historic Pallivasal Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kerala’s Idukki district on October 5, 2024. The visit provided students with invaluable insights into hydroelectric power generation and its role in sustainable energy production.

Pallivasal Power Plant stands as one of India’s oldest hydroelectric facilities. Operating under the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the plant harnesses the Periyar River’s power through six Pelton turbines – three 5MW units and three 7.5MW units – generating a total output of 37.5 MW of electricity.

Students gained comprehensive knowledge about:

  • The complete hydropower generation process
  • Modern automation and control systems
  • Advanced safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Mechanical aspects of hydroelectric turbines
  • Energy conversion principles in action

The visit offered a practical demonstration of how potential energy from the reservoir is converted to kinetic energy through the penstock system. Students observed the specialized design of turbine buckets and their role in momentum transfer, culminating in the generation of electrical power. The integrated learning experience provided students with a real-world perspective on renewable energy generation and its crucial role in building a sustainable future

Industrial Visit to Malabar Extrusions (P) Ltd.

On August 9, 2024, the S3ME students embarked on an enriching industrial visit to Malabar Extrusions (P) Ltd., a prominent player in the aluminum extrusion industry located in Peppathy. Accompanied by two faculty members, a group of 28 students gained valuable insights into the intricate processes involved in aluminum extrusion.

The visit provided a comprehensive overview of the production cycle, starting from the casting of aluminum ingots and culminating in the creation of extruded section profiles. The students were particularly intrigued by the manufacturing of extrusion dies, witnessing firsthand the precision and skill required in operating CNC lathes and Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) machines.

This industrial exposure not only complemented the students’ classroom learning but also offered practical insights into the real-world applications of their theoretical knowledge. The visit served as a valuable opportunity for the students to connect with industry professionals, understand industry trends, and explore potential career paths
