Workshop on Opportunities in Oil and Gas Field

SLBS Marklance, a globally renowned educational institution, organized a comprehensive workshop on September 5, 2024, to familiarize final-year students of Mechanical Engineering with the promising field of Oil and Gas. Industry experts, Mr. Shameem, Mr. Abhijith, and Mr. Anandha Padmanabhan from SLBS Marklance, shared their expertise and experience, providing students with valuable insights into the career prospects and challenges within this sector.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including an overview of the global oil and gas market, career paths within the industry, essential skills and qualifications, and a job market analysis. Participants gained a clear understanding of the industry trends, potential career options, and the necessary skills to succeed in this dynamic field.

By attending this workshop, students were able to:

Udyama 1.0: Bridging the Gap between Academia and Industry

Department of Mechanical Engineering was proud to host a hands-on workshop on 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing as part of the Udyama 1.0 initiative by the Government of Kerala. This initiative aims to foster entrepreneurship and innovation in the state by connecting academic institutions with industry.

The workshop led by Asst. Prof. Lovin K John and was held on Tuesday, 3rd September 2024 in the Tagore Hall. It was attended by senior secondary school, engineering, and polytechnic students. Participants gained valuable insights into the world of 3D printing and its applications in various industries. The workshop provided a practical learning experience that will equip students with the skills necessary for a successful transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0.

This event showcases Department of Mechanical Engineering’s commitment to providing students with relevant and up-to-date education.

Igniting the Entrepreneurial Spirit

Our department celebrated World Entrepreneurship Day on 22nd August 2024, in grand style with a captivating event. Our esteemed guest, Jose J Pulikkunnel from Trinity Engineers, delivered an inspiring keynote address that left our students brimming with entrepreneurial enthusiasm.

Mr.  Jose Pulikkunnel shared invaluable insights, real-world experiences, and practical tips on turning innovative ideas into successful ventures. His words resonated deeply with our students and faculty, motivating them to embrace risk-taking, perseverance, and creative problem-solving.

Tech Talk: Applications of Welding in Petroleum Refineries

The Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organized a tech talk on “Applications of Welding in Petroleum Refineries” on August 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM in Tagore Hall.

Industry experts, Mr. Sanal S and Mr. Mohammed Babu, both Senior Managers from BPCL Kochi Refinery, shared their invaluable knowledge on the critical role of welding in the petroleum refining process. The comprehensive talk covered a range of essential topics, including:

  • Types of Welding: A deep dive into welding processes commonly used in refineries.
  • API Codes: The importance of adhering to stringent industry standards for ensuring safety and quality.
  • Job Opportunities: Exploring diverse career paths within the welding industry, particularly in the petroleum sector.
  • Welding Certifications: The significance of certifications in enhancing employability and career growth.

The event provided a valuable platform for students and faculty to engage in insightful discussions and expand their understanding of welding applications. TIST extends its gratitude to the speakers and BPCL Kochi Refinery for their support in making this event a success.

Hands-on Workshop on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, in association with United NDT, Kochi, successfully conducted a comprehensive hands-on workshop on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques on July 27, 2024 for final year Mechanical Engineering students. The workshop aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills in various NDT methods.

The session was expertly handled by Mr. Vineesh P V, a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with over 16 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, specializing in NDT. He holds the esteemed ASNT NDT Level II certification in RT, UT, MPT, LPT, VT, and RTFI.

Workshop Highlights

  • The workshop covered four essential NDT techniques:
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT): Participants gained a thorough understanding of LPT principles, steps involved, surface preparation, and types of penetrants. Practical demonstrations and hands-on training complemented the theoretical knowledge.
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI): The workshop delved into the fundamentals of MPI, including basic steps, principles, magnetism laws, interpretation of test results, and advantages/disadvantages. Practical sessions provided valuable hands-on experience.
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Participants learned about UT equipment, basic principles, wave properties, sensitivity calculation, sound propagation modes, probe selection, and interpretation of echo results. Practical demonstrations and hands-on training were incorporated.
  • Radiographic Testing (RT): The workshop covered RT principles, equipment, exposure calculations, film properties, selection, exposure geometry, sensitivity, IQI, screens, safety, radiation hazards, documentation, and reporting. Practical demonstrations of film processing and radiographic testing were conducted.

This intensive workshop empowered participants with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in NDT techniques, enabling them to excel in various industrial applications.

Assembly & Dismantling of IC Engines: A Hands-On Workshop

On July 26th, 2024, the Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully conducted a practical workshop on the assembly and dismantling of Internal Combustion (IC) engines. The workshop catered to our fourth-year Mechanical Engineering students, providing them with valuable hands-on experience in a crucial area of automotive engineering. The workshop focused on the assembly and dismantling of Greaves 400 kVA diesel generator sets. A total of 35 enthusiastic students participated in the workshop, demonstrating their keen interest in the subject matter.

Program Highlights:
  • Hands-on Learning: Participants actively engaged in the assembly and dismantling processes of IC engines, gaining a deeper understanding of their components and working mechanisms.
  • Expert Guidance: Rajesh Kocheril, the esteemed Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, served as the resource person, providing invaluable insights and guidance throughout the workshop.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including:
    • Engine architecture and its various components
    • Step-by-step disassembly procedures
    • Proper cleaning and inspection of parts
    • Assembly techniques and torque specifications
    • Engine timing and synchronization
    • Troubleshooting common engine issues

Through this immersive workshop, participants gained a solid foundation in IC engine technology, enhancing their practical skills and problem-solving abilities. They are now better equipped to analyze, troubleshoot, and maintain IC engines effectively.

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants, who expressed their appreciation for the hands-on learning experience and the expert guidance provided. Building on this success, the Department of Mechanical Engineering plans to organize similar workshops in the future, covering other essential areas of automotive engineering.

3-Day Faculty Development Program on Solid Modeling using Autodesk Fusion 360

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Toc H Institute of Science & Technology, in collaboration with Bimit – an Autodesk Authorized Training Partner, successfully conducted a comprehensive 3-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Solid Modeling using Autodesk Fusion 360. Held at the CAD Lab from July 2-4, 2024, the program aimed to equip faculty members with advanced skills in 3D modeling and manufacturing simulation.

Program Highlights:

Day 1: CAD Design Fundamentals

  • Introduction to Autodesk Fusion 360 interface and workspace
  • Essential sketching and modeling techniques
  • Creating 3D models using basic geometric primitives
  • Constraining and dimensioning for accurate design
  • Assembly modeling and design for manufacturing

Day 2: Advanced CAD Design

  • Advanced modeling techniques for complex geometries
  • Direct modeling and parametric design workflows
  • Utilizing advanced features like lofting, sweeping, and surfacing
  • Collaborative design and sharing capabilities
  • Design for additive manufacturing (3D printing)

Day 3: CAM Simulation and Manufacturing

  • Introduction to CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing)
  • Setting up machine and toolpaths for milling and turning operations
  • Simulating machining processes for verification and optimization
  • Post-processing for CNC code generation
  • Integrating CAM with design for efficient manufacturing

Program Outcome:

The FDP provided participants with a solid foundation in Autodesk Fusion 360, enabling them to create complex 3D models, simulate manufacturing processes, and enhance their overall design and engineering capabilities. The program fostered a collaborative learning environment, enabling faculty members to exchange knowledge and best practices.

TECHNICAL TALK : Alumni Interaction by Saurav S Kumar

It was a half day alumni talk with Saurav S Kumar who is working at PolyWork’s India as Application specialist. He passed out from Toc H Institute of Science and Technology in the year 2021. It was very informative talk as it had face to face interaction and an assembly interaction helping us to understand properly. The event started at 2 PM of 22.08.2023 and ended at 4 pm. The event was successful through the help of google meet application for the interaction. S7 and S5 students were attended the meeting. The talk signified on improving soft skills and being more assertive in presentation. The talk also was informative on the way to present a resume and signified the importance of project and events like hackathons done by other institutions. The talk prepared students to deal with interviews professionally and preparations on facing placements.

TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON Advanced Manufacturing
Dr M UTHAYA KUMAR, Post Doctoral (IIT) Professor, head & Director (International relations) Kalasalingam University Tamil Nadu, had visited Our college and Department at 9.30 am 20-6-2023.He had delivered a technical talk on advance manufacturing process. His talk was very useful for the faculties who were seeking Research opportunities. He had discussed the topic Research challenges and guide lines for organizing an international conference.

TECHNICAL TALK on Alloys and Composites used in Aerospace Applications

Dr PTD Rajan, Senior Principal scientist and Chairman of the Academic progress committee at the CSIR-National Institute for Multidisciplinary Science and Technology in Trivandrum, was visited our department at 10.30 AM on 01 April 2023. He had delivered a technical talk for S4 and S6 students at Tagore Hall. It was found very useful for students; in that he explained the future scope of “light alloys and composites for automotive and aerospace application”.

TRAINING ON ELEATION’S SOLID WORKS
A 5day training program on solid works was conducted for S4 mechanical students from May 23rd to May 27th 2023. The training was found useful for students who are interested in 3D Modelling, Assembling and drafting. The Program was conducted by MOU Partner Eleation Pune in which students were taught Modelling, Assembling, drafting and Animation using the software.

Internship Training
Training Conducted for students of S6ME from 9/5/2023 to 19/5/2023 by Armtec Engineers Pvt Ltd. Students were provided exposure to various aspects of Mechanical Construction and Erection Jobs. The course was found useful for students seeking jobs in future

Technical Talk on QA And QC
Anish Abraham (Technical Head) from Adi Institute of quality engineer’s cochin had delivered a session on QA and QC. The session was conducted for final year and 3rd year students on 21 th March 2023. It was found useful for students for there future career plans. Adi institute of quality engineers is a successful institute which offers various courses under skill development program for technical aspirants.

WORKSHOP ON NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

A one-day training on non-destructive testing was conducted for S5 Mechanical students by Metal scan Inspection services on 14/12/2022. The trainer Verghese P J delivered the session. The course was helpful for future students because the class included advanced techniques in NDT.

TECHNICAL TALK ON HYBRID VEHICLES

A technical talk on Hybrid Vehicles was conducted for S3 Mechanical Students on 19/12/2022 by Nippon Toyota. Mr. Harish trainer from Nippon Toyota delivered the session. The course would be useful for understanding the recent trends in automobiles.
