2025 – 26
Participation in YUVA AAPDA MITRA – Disaster Management Training Programme
Our S6 student Muhammed Shadhin M S (2023 batch) participated in the YUVA AAPDA MITRA Disaster Management Training Programme for Ernakulam District, conducted from 11–18 May 2026 at Hotel Hill View Kakkanad. The programme was a government-supported initiative aimed at equipping participants with essential skills in disaster preparedness and emergency response through structured training sessions.
The programme began with volunteer registration and orientation sessions, followed by the official inauguration of the 7-day training camp by Ms. Priyanka IAS, District Collector of Ernakulam, Kerala. In her address, she emphasized the importance of youth volunteers in disaster management and emergency response activities.
An interactive session was also conducted by Mrs. Anjali Parameswaran, Hazard analyst – District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Ernakulam , where participants were introduced to district-specific hazards, early warning systems, local risk analysis, and the responsibilities of volunteers during emergencies.
The training covered key areas including orientation, HAM radio communication, fire and rescue operations, basic life support (BLS), trauma care and triage, behavioural skills, volunteerism, crowd management, social policing, and NDRF training. Interactive sessions, quizzes, and group activities were also conducted to enhance practical understanding and teamwork.
Student Achievements in NPTEL Certification Courses
The Department congratulates Mr. Althaf M Shareef, S4 Safety & Fire Engineering student (2024 Batch), for successfully completing the NPTEL online certification course on Climate Hazards and Disaster Mitigation during the Jan–Apr 2026 session.
The department appreciates his interest in continuous learning and wishes him success in his future endeavours.
Innovation Ambassador Training Completion
Asst. Prof. Mariya Rose Vincent from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, has successfully completed the Innovation Ambassador (Foundation Level) training conducted by MoE’s Innovation Cell and AICTE under IIC on 15/05/26. The program included 16 sessions (30 hours) and helped develop skills in innovation and entrepreneurship
Faculty Achievements in NPTEL Certification Courses
The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering proudly congratulates the faculty members and lab instructors for successfully completing NPTEL certification courses in emerging and important areas of environmental and energy studies.
Mr. Naveen G, Assistant Professor, and Mr. Arun K, Lab Instructor, successfully completed the course on Plastic Waste Management. Mr. Naveen G secured Elite Silver certification and was placed among the Top 2% performers in the course, while Mr. Arun K achieved Elite Silver certification.
Mr. Renju Raj, Assistant Professor, completed the NPTEL course on Wind Energy, securing Elite Silver certification and a position among the Top 5% performers.
Mr. Arjun Natarajan, Assistant Professor, Ms. Akshaya Rajendran, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Nishamol M, Lab Instructor, successfully completed the course on Air Pollution and Control. Mr. Arjun Natarajan achieved Elite Silver certification, while Ms. Akshaya Rajendran and Ms. Nishamol M achieved Elite certification in the course.
The department appreciates their dedication towards continuous learning and professional development.
Student Spotlight: Alfin P Baiju secured Third Place in Powerlifting
We are proud to announce that Alfin P Baiju (S4 SFE) secured Third Prize in the Ernakulam District Classic Powerlifting Competition (Junior Category, 83 kg), held on 28th March 2026.
This achievement shows his hard work and dedication in powerlifting. It makes the department proud and inspires other students. We congratulate him on this success and wish him many more achievements in the future.
Excellence in Professional Certification – A Proud Achievement
We proudly congratulate Haady Marwan, S8 student , SFE Department, TIST for successfully completing the prestigious ISO 45001:2018 Lead Auditor (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) and ISO 14001:2015 Lead Auditor (Environmental Management Systems) training courses.
Achieving these internationally recognized certifications is a testament to his strong commitment, technical proficiency, and passion for advancing knowledge in safety and environmental management. This accomplishment not only strengthens his professional credentials but also reflects the high standards of excellence upheld by our students.

Achievement at Kerala College Premier League (KCPL)
The Kerala College Premier League (KCPL) was held at FISAT, Angamaly on 10/03/26, where students actively participated and showcased their sporting talent. Abhimanyu P T, S8 student SFE Department, delivered an outstanding performance and was awarded the Man of the Match.The event provided a great platform for students to demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit.
Student Achievement – Insightful Contribution to Surakshajalakam
Fathima Thamanna C. A., a third-year Safety and Fire Engineering student at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, contributed an insightful article titled “Does your mind tire faster than machines? What is brain fog?” to Surakshajalakam, the official safety awareness souvenir published by the Department of Factories and Boilers, Kerala usually around National Safety Day / Safety Week events.
The article explores the concept of brain fog, its effects on mental alertness, and the importance of maintaining cognitive health, especially in safety-critical professions. Fathima’s work highlights the need for awareness about mental fatigue and its impact on workplace safety, encouraging readers to recognize and manage this condition proactively.
This outstanding contribution reflects Fathima’s dedication and keen insight into important safety and health topics. We congratulate her on this achievement and commend her for representing the Safety and Fire Engineering department with such excellence, bringing pride to our institution through her valuable participation in a prestigious state-level safety publication.
TIST Premier League 2026 – Inter-Department Football Competition
On 6th March 2026, the Safety and Fire Engineering team of TIST competed in the TIST Premier League 2026, an inter-department football tournament, and secured the position of runners-up.
This achievement highlights the students’ sportsmanship and departmental spirit, bringing pride to the Safety and Fire Engineering Department. Congratulations to the team.
Award Ceremony at National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter Safety Awards 2026
As part of the celebration of the 55th National Safety Day on 5th March 2026, the Award Ceremony organized by the National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter was held at Chittilappilly Square.
Fathima Thamanna C. A, third-year student of Safety and Fire Engineering Department, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, received the First Prize in the English Essay Writing Competition as well as the First Prize in the Safety Poster Making Competition, which were conducted earlier as part of the National Safety Day celebrations.
The awards were presented by S. Sakthimani, Chairman and Managing Director of The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited.
The department proudly congratulates her on this outstanding achievement and wishes her continued success in promoting safety awareness.
Faculty Participation in Faculty Development Programme
Mr. Naveen G, Mr. Renju Raj, Ms. Mariya Rose Vincent, and Ms. Akshaya Rajendran, along with Lab Instructors Ms. Nishamol M and Mr. Arun K of SFE Department,TIST, participated in the six-day Faculty Development Programme on “Ethical Governance and Sustainable Economics: Integrating Ethics, Economics and Workplace Communication.” The programme was organized by the Department of Science and Humanities, Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Angamaly, Kerala, from 23rd to 28th February 2026.
The programme focused on strengthening faculty understanding of ethical governance, sustainable economic practices, and effective workplace communication. Through expert sessions and discussions, participants gained insights into integrating ethical values and sustainability principles into academic and professional environments.
Sports Day 2026 Winners
The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering proudly highlights the sports achievements of the students during the Sports Day conducted on 31/01/26.
Yadhunandh P V of SFE S4 secured first place in discus throw, second place in shot put, and third place in triple jump, showing great strength and talent.
Harinandan P M of SFE S2 won second place in long jump with a commendable performance. The department appreciates their efforts and wishes them continued success.
Research Paper Presentation at ICTSE-2026, NIT Warangal
Mr. Renju Raj, Assistant Professor, Department of SFE presented a research paper, “CFD-Based Investigations of Airfoil Aerodynamics for Offshore Wind Turbine Applications,” at the International Conference on Thermal Sciences and Sustainable Energy (ICTSE‑2026) organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Warangal 23–24 January 2026.
Toc H Cricket League 2026: Faculty Team crowned Champions.
The TOCH Cricket League, held on 16 January 2026, concluded with an energetic and competitive spirit, celebrating teamwork and sportsmanship. The faculty team emerged as the Champions, showcasing exceptional performance throughout the tournament. Faculty members from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, Mr.Naveen G, Mr. Renju Raj, Mr. Arjun Natarajan, and Mr. Praveen K.R., were integral members of the winning squad, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Sports Achievement – Kho Kho
We are proud to announce that Gayathri V S, a student of S2 SFE, was a member of the Kho Kho team that secured First Runner-Up position (Women’s) in the KTU D-Zone Kho Kho Tournament. The department congratulates Gayathri V S on this commendable accomplishment and wishes her continued success in both academics and sports. Johith James, S6 SFE student, also actively participated in the Men’s Kho Kho event, showcasing commendable sportsmanship and team spirit.
S2 SFE Team Secures First Prize in LAUNCHPAD 2026 and Third Place in Inception 1.0
The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering proudly congratulates the S2 SFE students (2025 Admission) for securing First Prize in LAUNCHPAD 2026, an innovation-focused event organised by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC), TIST, held on 13 January 2026. The winning team comprised Krishnajith S S, Sangeeth Gangan, Hanan P, and Jasim Parvesh A B, who demonstrated excellent creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Competing in an event designed for first-year students, the team stood out among the participants and emerged as champions with their project titled “Lifedot Healthcare.”
The team also secured Third Position at Inception 1.0, conducted as part of the Rajagiri Business Conclave in collaboration with IEDC. The team was awarded a cash prize of ₹5,000 by Shri P. Rajeev, Honourable Minister of Industries, Law, and Coir, Government of Kerala. Our Principal, Dr. Preethi Thekkath congratulated the team for their achievement and appreciated their innovative efforts and teamwork. The Department applauds the team for their commendable achievement and wishes them continued success.
Dr. Stephy James Successfully Completes PhD in Safety and Risk Engineering
Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor in the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST, has successfully completed his PhD in Safety and Risk Engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on 09/01/2026.
His doctoral research, titled “Investigations on the Application of Soft Computing Techniques for the Assessment of Risk in LNG Storage Facility”, marks a significant contribution to the field of safety engineering and risk management in LNG operations.
Dr. Stephy James has consistently demonstrated exceptional academic dedication, research excellence, and commitment to advancing the field of safety engineering. The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Stephy James and wishes him continued success in his teaching, research, and professional pursuits.

Best Presentation Award at ICSEE 2025 – BITS Pilani, Goa Campus
The Department of Safety & Fire Engineering is proud to share that Mr. Renju Raj, Assistant Professor, received the Best Presentation Award (3rd Prize) under the Energy Theme at the International Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environment.
The conference was hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus from 8th to 10th March 2025.
Mr. Renju Raj presented his research work titled “Numerical Investigations of Flow over Wind Turbine Blades” under the Energy/Environment theme.

Sethu Prakash Secures Mr. Kerala (Junior 55 kg) Championship
The Department of Safety & Fire Engineering, proudly congratulates Sethu Prakash, Second Year B.Tech student, on winning the prestigious Mr. Kerala – Junior 55 kg title at the Open Natural Mr. Kerala Competition 2024.
With remarkable determination, discipline, and physical excellence, Sethu outperformed strong competition from across the state to secure the championship in his category. The Department extends its heartfelt wishes to Sethu Prakash for continued success in his future competitions and achievements.
Prof. (Dr.) Gnana Sheela K Receives Best Coordinator Award at UDYAMA 1.0
Toc H Institute of Science & Technology proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Prof. (Dr.) Gnana Sheela K, Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, who was honoured with the Best Coordinator Award at UDYAMA 1.0 – Industry Academia Government Conclave 2024.
The award was presented by R. Bindu, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Kerala, on 7th December 2024.
TIST was honoured with multiple accolades in recognition of its outstanding participation and coordination:

Best Paper Award at International Conference – 2025
We are proud to announce that the paper titled “Development of an Innovative Multi-Surveillance Crawler for Confined Space Monitoring in Construction Management” received the Best Paper Award at the 4th International Conference on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability, 2025, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST.
The paper, presented under the theme Smart Construction Technologies, was authored by Prof. (Dr.) Gnana Sheela K, Abhishek R, Al Ameen N, Jobin John, and Layas R J from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering.

KTU CERD Student Project Grant Awarded
We are delighted to announce that the project titled “Confined Space Multi-Surveillance Crawler” has received a funding of Rs. 34,120/- under the KTU CERD student project category from the APJAKTU Research Section. The project is led by student team members Abhishek R, Al Ameen N, Jobin John, and Layas R J, under the guidance of Principal Investigator Prof. (Dr.) Gnana Sheela K and Co-Principal Investigator Asst. Prof. Naveen G from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering.
