A Taste of Kindness: Biriyani Challenge by Students

On 25/03/2026, the students of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department organized the Biriyani Challenge, a heartfelt initiative aimed at feeding the hungry and spreading kindness within the community.

Through this meaningful effort, students came together to distribute meals to those in need, demonstrating not only teamwork but also a strong sense of social responsibility. The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to nurturing not just skilled professionals, but also compassionate individuals.

This act of generosity stands as a reminder that small efforts can make a big difference in the lives of others.

Dr. Stephy James as Resource Person for Online Webinar on “Electrical Safety and Significance of Basic Life Support”

Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor, Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, served as the resource person for a webinar on “Electrical Safety and Significance of Basic Life Support” conducted by the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology on 12/03/2026. The webinar was held in online mode.

During the session, Dr. Stephy James discussed the importance of electrical safety practices, common electrical hazards, and preventive measures in workplaces and healthcare environments. The session also highlighted the significance of Basic Life Support (BLS) and the importance of timely response during emergencies.

The webinar provided valuable insights to the participants and enhanced their awareness regarding electrical safety and life-saving techniques.

Invited Talk on Safety in Material Handling and Rigging Practices – TOYO Engineering India Pvt. Ltd.

An Invited Talk was organized at TOYO Engineering India Private Limited on 10th  March 2026, focusing on “Safety in Material Handling and Rigging Practices in Lifting.” The session was delivered by Mr. Naveen G, Assistant Professor, SFE Department,TISTand highlighted the importance of safe practices, hazard prevention, and proper techniques in material handling and lifting operations. The talk provided participants with practical insights and industry-relevant knowledge, emphasizing the role of safety in preventing accidents and ensuring efficient workplace operations.

BLS and CPR Training Session by Asst. Prof. Renju Raj at KSPPL

As part of 55th National Safety Week 2026, a training session on Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR was conducted on 10th  March 2026 at Kochi Salem Pipeline Private Ltd (KSPPL). The session was facilitated by Asst. Prof. Renju Raj of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, TIST and focused on equipping participants with essential life-saving skills, including emergency response techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid procedures. Employees were trained to respond effectively to medical emergencies, ensuring safety and preparedness in the workplace. The program emphasized practical demonstrations and hands-on practice to enhance confidence and competence in emergency situations.

Invited Talk on Personal Protective Equipment  at CII Guardians, Pvt.Limited

As part of 55th National Safety Week 2026, Mariya Rose Vincent, Assistant Professor of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, delivered a talk on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the workers of CII Guardians Pvt. Limited on 10/03/2026.

The session focused on the importance, proper selection, and correct usage of PPE in industrial workplaces. Workers gained valuable insights into how PPE helps prevent workplace injuries and promotes a culture of safety and compliance in their daily operations.

Dr. Stephy James Delivers Inaugural Address at 55th  National Safety Week Celebrations held at Plant Lipids

Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, TIST, was invited as the Chief Guest for the 55th  National Safety Week Celebrations 2026 held at Plant Lipids (P) Ltd., Kolenchery on 9th March 2026.

During the programme, he delivered the inaugural address and a safety talk, sharing valuable insights on workplace safety culture, human factors, and emerging trends in industrial safety. The session emphasized the importance of ensuring that every worker operates in a safe environment and returns home safely.

The event served as a meaningful platform to strengthen industry-academic collaboration and to promote awareness on safety practices. The enthusiastic participation and commitment of the Plant Lipids team highlighted the significance of National Safety Week as a reminder to continuously uphold and improve safety standards in the workplace.

Session on Electrical Safety for KMRL Employees

As part of the 55th  National Safety Week 2026, a session on “Electrical Safety” was conducted on 8th  March 2026 for employees of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). The session was handled by Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, and focused on creating awareness about electrical hazards, safe work practices, and preventive measures in handling electrical systems.

The session provided participants with practical insights into identifying electrical risks, ensuring safe operations, and maintaining workplace safety standards. It also emphasized the importance of safety culture, adherence to guidelines, and responsible behaviour in preventing electrical accidents in daily operations.

Session on Behavioural and Occupational Safety for KMRL Employees

As part of the 55th  National Safety Week 2026, a session on “Behavioural and Occupational Safety” was facilitated on 6th  March 2026 for employees of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). The session was conducted by Asst. Prof. Renju Raj of Safety and Fire Engineering Department and focused on promoting safe behaviors, occupational safety practices, and awareness of workplace hazards. The program provided the participants with practical insights into maintaining a safe and responsible working environment while emphasizing the importance of safety culture in daily operations.

Invited Talk on Rigging and Material Handling Safety at KMRL

As part of the 55th National Safety Week 2026, Mr. Naveen G, Assistant Professor from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST, delivered an invited talk at Kochi Metro Rail Limited on 05/03/2026 as part of a training programme.

The session focused on Rigging and Material Handling Safety, highlighting safe lifting practices, hazard identification, risk control measures, and the importance of proper rigging techniques to prevent workplace accidents. The talk provided valuable insights to participants on ensuring safe material handling operations in industrial environments.

Road Safety Awareness Mime by SFE Students at National Safety Day Award Ceremony

As part of the celebration of the 55th National Safety Day on 5th March 2026, the Award Ceremony organized by the National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter was held at Chittilappilly Square.

Students from the Safety and Fire Engineering Department of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology presented a Road Safety Awareness Mime, highlighting traffic rules, helmet use, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, and responsible behaviour on roads to promote accident prevention. The ceremony was attended by some students and faculty members from the department, including Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor and Executive Committee Member of the National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter, Ms. Mariya Rose Vincent, and Ms. Akshaya Rajendran.

Dr. Stephy James Graces National Safety Day Celebrations at Synthite

Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, TIST, was invited as the Chief Guest for the National Safety Day celebrations held at Synthite Taste Park, Pangode on 4th March 2026. The event showcased a strong commitment to safety culture and responsible industrial practices.

A key highlight of the programme was a Safety Debate on “Necessity of Industrial Safety,” which was moderated by Dr. Stephy James. The session encouraged active participation and meaningful discussions, emphasizing the importance of safety as a fundamental requirement in every workplace.

The programme provided an excellent platform to engage with industry professionals and promote awareness about industrial safety, leadership, and the significance of building a strong safety culture.

Road Safety Mime Performance at wonderla– National Safety Day

On 4th  March 2026, as part of the observance of National Safety Day, students from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology performed a Road Safety Awareness Mime at Wonderla Kochi, in association with the National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter.

The mime performance highlighted important road safety practices, including following traffic rules, wearing helmets, avoiding mobile phone use and overspeeding while driving, and promoting responsible behaviour on the roads. The silent act effectively captured the attention of the audience and conveyed a strong message on preventing road accidents.

In appreciation of their impactful performance and contribution to safety awareness, the students were awarded a memento and a Letter of Appreciation by Wonderla Kochi. These recognitions were later distributed to the students by the Principal at the college on 09/03/2026.

Run for Safety marathon – National Safety Day 2026

As part of National Safety Day, the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST organized “Run for Safety” marathon on 4th March 2026 in association with Six Guards Private Limited, ARISTA, and the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC). The run started from Rajendra Maidan Park and concluded at Abdul Kalam Marg, with around 150 participants taking part in the event.

The programme was flagged off by Vineeth Jacob, Managing Director and CEO of Six Guards Private Limited, in the presence of A L Jackson, Secretary of the National Safety Council Kerala Chapter. Dr. Stephy James delivered a speech highlighting the importance of safety awareness and responsible practices in everyday life. Asst.Prof. Thomas A Vetteth, HOD Safety and Fire Engineering Department and faculty members of SFE department were also present. The event was coordinated by Mr. Arjun Natarajan, Assistant Professor, SFE Department, TIST.

After the run, the safety flag was hoisted by Perumal Sankar S, Professor of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, and the Safety Pledge was taken by the participants. Medals were awarded to the first 30 finishers of the run as a special recognition. The event aimed to spread awareness about the importance of safety in daily life, workplaces, and the community.

Podcast Session on Process Safety and Nuclear Disaster Preparedness

Dr. Stephy James, Associate Professor of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, TIST, was featured in an episode of the Hacklab Podcast by Hacklab Solutions, released on 1st  March 2026 on YouTube. In this episode titled “How to be Safe in Case of a Nuclear Disaster? – Process Safety Importance,” he discussed important aspects of process safety and industrial risk management.

During the discussion, Dr. Stephy explained the difference between Process Safety and Occupational Safety, emphasizing that good injury statistics such as low TRIR and LTI do not always indicate that organizations are safe from major accidents. The session also addressed hidden process risks, barrier failures identified during safety audits, early warning signs of major incidents, and the limitations of relying solely on tools such as HIRAC for risk assessment.

Through this podcast, Dr. Stephy James shared practical insights for industry professionals and leaders on strengthening process safety management systems and improving preparedness for high-consequence events, including nuclear and industrial disasters. The episode served as an informative platform for spreading awareness about proactive safety practices and effective risk management in complex industrial environments.

In an effort to address the situations of disaster affecting children, Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST and the Mulanthuruthy Fire and Rescue Brigade joined hands to conduct a mock drill at T.I.M.E Kids Pre School, Mulanthuruthy on 10th of May,2024 , with the intention of preparing for emergency scenarios.
The program involved the participation of around fifty children, focusing on various types of accidents and how to ensure their safety. They were trained on how to respond to emergencies and mitigate potential risks.
