Civil Defence Warriors Training at Gandhinagar Fire Station

The Civil Defence Warriors Training Programme under the Ministry of Home Affairs was conducted from 20/02/2026 to 22/02/2026 at Gandhinagar Fire Station.

Students from S4 and S6 of the Safety and Fire Engineering Department, TIST  participated in the training programme organized by the Civil Defence voluntary organization.

The training provided students with practical exposure to disaster management, first aid, search and rescue operations, and basic firefighting techniques. It helped enhance their awareness of emergency preparedness, community safety, and the role of volunteers during disasters and crisis situations.

1. Technical talk on “Constructional Safety”

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST  in association with ARISTA, successfully organized a Technical Talk on Construction Safety on 22nd October 2025. The session was led by Mr. Josy John, a distinguished Safety Ambassador, Practitioner, and Thought Leader with over 35 years of experience in promoting safety excellence across diverse industries.

The talk focused on the significance of implementing effective safety management in construction, highlighting key aspects such as hazard identification, risk assessment, accident prevention, and the development of a strong safety culture at worksites. Mr. Josy John shared his expertise on integrating safety into every phase of construction from planning and design to execution emphasizing that safety is not just compliance but a responsibility towards human life.

The session proved to be highly beneficial for students, providing them with practical exposure to real-life safety challenges and reinforcing the importance of proactive safety leadership. It enhanced their understanding of professional safety practices and inspired them to contribute to building safer and more sustainable construction environments.

2. Participation in National Workshop on “Hydrogen Economy: Challenges and Opportunities”

Mr. PRAVEEN K R, Assistant Professor, & Mr. RENJU RAJ, Assistant Professor, Faculty members from the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science & Technology, along with 4 students participated in a prestigious Two-Day All-India Workshop on “Hydrogen Economy: Challenges and Opportunities, held on 1st and 2nd August 2025. The event was organized by the Institution of Engineers (India), Kochi Local Centre, under the aegis of the Chemical Engineering Division Board, IEI, in association with the Centre of Green Technology & Management (CGTM).

The workshop brought together experts, academicians, researchers, and industry professionals from across the country to deliberate on the emerging role of hydrogen as a future energy carrier. Discussions focused on the current technological landscape, production pathways, storage systems, transportation challenges, safety considerations, and the policy framework required to accelerate India’s transition to a hydrogen-based economy

Through technical sessions, case studies, and panel discussions, the workshop provided deep insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting hydrogen as a sustainable energy solution. The participation of Toc H faculty members strengthened the department’s academic engagement with emerging green technologies and enhanced their understanding of cutting-edge developments relevant to energy safety and engineering education.

The institution’s involvement in such national-level knowledge platforms reinforces its commitment to promoting advanced research, sustainability practices, and industry-oriented academic exposure.

  1. Invited Talk on “Elevator and Escalator Safety”

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering at Toc H Institute of Science & Technology organized an informative Invited Talk on “Elevator and Escalator Safety” on 30 July 2025 at Amrutham Hall. The session was conducted by experts from Mitsubishi Elevator India Private Limited, one of the leading global names in vertical transportation technology.

The resource persons introduced students to the core safety principles involved in the design, installation, and operation of elevators and escalators. The session covered critical topics such as mechanical and electrical safety systems, emergency braking mechanisms, routine maintenance practices, passenger safety guidelines, and common causes of operational failures in vertical mobility equipment.

Through real-world examples and case studies, the speakers highlighted the importance of preventive maintenance, regulatory compliance, and the role of engineering professionals in ensuring safe building transportation systems. The interactive demonstrations and Q&A sessions enabled students to deepen their understanding of safety considerations within commercial and industrial infrastructure.

    1. Invited Talk on “Industrial Safety: Real Life Lessons”

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science & Technology, organized an insightful Invited Talk on “Industrial Safety: Real Life Lessons” on 18 July 2025 at Amrutham Hall. The session was delivered by Mr. Pramod Subramannian, Assistant Executive Engineer (Electrical), BPCL Kochi Refinery, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in industrial operations and safety management.

Mr. Pramod shared real-world case studies drawn from his work in one of India’s leading petroleum refineries, giving students a close look at the critical importance of safety culture, incident prevention, and adherence to industrial safety protocols. He highlighted key lessons learned from actual industrial scenarios, emphasizing the role of human factors, risk identification, behavior-based safety practices, and emergency response planning.

The session provided students with valuable exposure to the practical challenges and responsibilities involved in ensuring safety in high-risk industrial environments. The interactive nature of the talk encouraged active student participation, with many engaging in discussions related to electrical safety, plant operations, and career pathways in the oil and gas sector.

2024- 2025

BIM Bootcamp 2.0: 3 Days Hands-On Learning

Successfully conducted BIM Bootcamp 2.0 at TIST, a three-day hands-on training program from March 3rd to 5th, 2025. This advanced workshop was designed to equip S8 civil students with in-depth knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM), enhancing their technical expertise and industry readiness.

Led by Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu, who trained under KTU & the Indian Institute of Infrastructure & Construction, the Bootcamp provided 27 students with immersive learning experiences. The practical sessions focused on real-world applications of BIM, strengthening their skills in digital construction technology. Such initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing placement opportunities and preparing students for the evolving demands of the industry

Talk on awareness of “ROAD SAFETY”

On January 23, 2025, a road safety awareness talk was conducted by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, organized by IIC and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Programme Implementation Unit in Ernakulam. Sri. Bharatchandran, Motor Vehicle Inspector, Ernakulam was the main speaker, emphasizing the importance of road safety measures and responsible driving. Around 50 students from the Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Safety and Fire Engineering departments attended the session.

Workshop on Basic Life Support

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST, successfully organized a Workshop on Basic Life Support on October 15, 2024. The session was led by Ms. Alisha Jomesh and Ms. Janvi Komath from Welcare College of Nursing, Ernakulam. The workshop provided participants with essential life-saving skills and hands-on training, enhancing their preparedness for emergency situations.

Seminar on “How to Conduct an Electrical Safety Audit”

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, in collaboration with the National Safety Council – Kerala Chapter, organized a seminar on “How to Conduct an Electrical Safety Audit” on September 28, 2024, at Amrutham Hall. The session, aimed at engineering students, featured expert insights from Mr. Nithin George, Mr. Sooraj N. M., and Mr. Joseph Kuriakose (Assistant Electrical Inspectors), along with Ms. Tessy Varghese (Deputy Electrical Inspector). The speakers covered key aspects of electrical safety audits, including risk assessment, inspection methodologies, and compliance with safety regulations. The students from Safety and Fire Engineering and Electrical engineering department attended the seminar.

Session on “Innovative Infrastructure Development” – UDYAMA 1.0

The Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST, in collaboration with UDYAMA 1.0, successfully conducted an insightful session on “Innovative Infrastructure Development” on September 24, 2024, at Tagore Hall.

The event was graced by Dr. Babu Jose, General Manager (Operations), FACT Cochin Division, who shared his expertise and valuable insights on advancements in infrastructure development. The session provided an engaging platform for students and professionals to explore innovative approaches in the field.

Workshop on ‘Basic life support & First-aid for common emergencies by Asst. Prof. Stephy James conducted on 15th of March,2024 as a part of ‘Agnivo 24’, National level Safety Symposium on 14th of March, 2024.

Workshop on ‘ Managing Major Emergencies in an Oil Field ‘ by oil drilling expert Mr. Mathew Vetteth on the 3rd of April, 2024, organised by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST.

Workshop on Cooling Tower Technologies by Shri. P. N. Narayana Pillai, retd GM FACT, organised by the department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST on 14th of February, 2024.

2022- 2023
Meeting the industrial experts – session 4
Technical talk on ‘ Safety in Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry and Insight on OISD Standards’  was conducted by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST on 5th of December, 2023. The session was handled by Mr. A V Gopalakrishnan (Sr. Manager, HSE , BPCL) and Mr. Sethu N Nandan (Manager , HSE , BPCL).

First Aid and CPR training for S5 students (2021 admission)  conducted on 8th of November, 2023 at Amrutham Hall by Dr. A P Varma, Medical Officer, Apollo Tyres, organised by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST.

Industrial Hygiene Lab conducted at the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering, TIST, as a part of the Certificate Course for Supervisors employed in Hazardous Process Industries under section 41C(b) of the Factories Act(1948) on 4th of November, 2023.

A training session on behavior-based safety with international certification was conducted as part of the Agnivo’23, National Level Safety Symposium organized by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering in association with the National Safety Council Kerala chapter on 14th March 2023. This session aimed to educate participants on the importance of employee behavior in promoting a safer workplace environment.

Dr. Babu Jose, GM Operations FACT Kochi, conducted a talk series on the topic of safety management in chemical MAH installations on 14th March 2023, as part of Agnivo’23, a National level safety symposium organized by the Department of Safety and Fire Engineering in association with National Safety Council Kerala chapter.

Ashwin K, Jeswin John Michael, M A Cherian, Yadhukrishna K B, Aswin K Sivadas, Akul Shine, Avinash V B, Arjun S, Neeraj Sajeev, Krishna Anand and Arjun P S of s5 (2020ad) Safety and Fire Engg., TIST successfully completed the training program on LT07 – Electrical Safety conducted by L&T Electrical & Automation – Switchgear Training Centre, Ooty, Coonoor, TN.

First Aid and CPR training for S5 students (2020 admission) was conducted on 25th October 2022 at Amrutham Hall. Dr. A P Varma, Medical Officer, Apollo Tyres handled a session on first aid and the participants got hands-on CPR training.

Department of Safety & Fire Engg. in association with Kerala Fire & Rescue Department conducted a mock drill and safety training session for the students and staff of the college on 24 June 2022. Various fire fighting and rescue equipment and accessories were displayed and a mock rescue drill operation was exhibited. Mr. Sajeevan, Station Officer, Piravom led the session.
