Harvesting Harmony: Empowering Women in Aquaponics

Department in association with Arakunnam Vayanashala, celebrated World Water Day 2024 on March 22nd. The event was titled “Harvesting Harmony: Empowering Women in Aquaponics”, focused on sustainable water management and agriculture. Asst. Prof. Vidya Jose, Civil Engineering Department, TIST enlightened neighbourhood ladies on aquaponics’ role in water conservation and food production. Discussions highlighted eco-friendly farming practices, promoting community resilience. The collaboration between the Department and Vayanashala exemplifies a concerted effort towards water sustainability. Attendees gained practical insights into aquaponics, contributing to the collective endeavour of water stewardship and empowerment.

Expert Interaction at GPC, Muttam

Dr. Vasudev R, HOD interacted with the students of GPC, Muttam on 21/02/2024. Sir has discussed on Good Construction Practices to be followed in a construction industry. Also gave an insight on opportunities in the field of Civil Engineering

Expert Interaction at GPC, Chelad

Dr. Vasudev R, HOD interacted with the students of GPC, Chelad, Kothamangalm on 14/02/2024. Sir has discussed on “Good Construction Practices” focussing mainly on the do’s and don’ts amongst the activities followed in the construction. Also gave an awareness on career development and opportunities in the field of Civil Engineering. 

Expert Interaction at St.Ignatius VHSSKanjiramattom

On November 20, 2023, an interactive session was held with St. Ignatius Vocational Higher Secondary School students by Dr. Vasudev R, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering. Sir has discussed the importance of Kerala Municipality Building Rules (KMBR) and Kerala Panchayath Building Rules (KPBR) in the state’s development. Emphasized on KMBR and KPBR for ensuring safe and sustainable construction. Discussed on how KMBR and KPBR incorporate environmental and safety standards. Engaged students in a dynamic Q&A to address queries and encourage discussion. The session provided valuable insights, equipping students to appreciate the role of KMBR and KPBR in shaping a sustainable and safe built environment in Kerala.

Project Expo Tathva ’23

A project expo Tathva ’23 was jointly organised by Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering on 17th November 2023. Project Expo played a vital role in nurturing a culture of innovation, fostering collaboration and encouraging the development of novel solutions to real-world problems. Students from various schools actively participated for the Expo.It has also provided a platform for our students to gain valuable experience in presenting their work, receiving constructive feedback, and networking with peers and experts.

Project “Sparsh” for Mithram School and Rehabilitation Centre

Sparsh, a collaborative project between the Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Electronics of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology was handed over to Mithram School and Rehabilitation Centre, Arakkunnam on 9th January 2023. The chief guest for the occasion was Sri. Adv. Anoop Jacob MLA. The project Sparsh comprises a sensory garden and a sensory room, which have been designed specifically for the benefit of students with special needs and to create a positive impact on their learning experience. The sensory garden is a peaceful and serene space that provides an opportunity for students to connect with nature and the sensory room is a multi-sensory environment that caters to the different learning needs of students.

Questionnaire Survey for the Performance Evaluation of Kochi Water Metro

Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology conducted a questionnaire survey in association with KSCSTE-NATPAC for the project “Performance Evaluation of Kochi Water Metro” on 27th and 28th February 2023. M Tech and B Tech students along with faculty members participated in the survey. Around 300 persons were interviewed from Ernakulam, Mulavukad, and Varapuzha boat jetties to collect sociodemographic, trip, and activity characteristics as well as details regarding commuters’ importance satisfaction of State Water Transportation and scenario analysis of various travel cost. The survey provided students an exposure to the practical applicability of questionnaire surveys in transportation engineering.

Questionnaire Survey for the Project “Impact of Integrated Feeder Services for Encouraging Public Transport Patronage”

B Tech, M Tech students and faculty members of the department conducted Questionnaire Survey for a project titled “Impact of Integrated Feeder Services for Encouraging Public Transport Patronage”, assigned by KSCSTE-NATPAC on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd March 2023. Around 1420 people were interviewed to collect sociodemographic characteristics and commuter attitudes about various transportation/feeder service policies, including feeder policies, new service policies, revision, and ITS policies.

Logo Launch and Project Orientation of Mission Free Flow

Logo launch and project orientation of “Mission Free Flow” undertaken by Department of Civil Engineering initiated by Mulanthuruthy Block Panchayath was held on 28th March 2023 at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology. The chief guest of the event, C.R. Neelakandan, an Environmentalist inaugurated and delivered the inaugural address. He has also presented the logo of Mission Free Flow. Principal Prof. Dr. Preethy Thekkath and HoD, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasudev R addressed the gathering. Raju P Nair, President, of Mulanthuruthy Block Panchayath gave a brief idea of the project. The project aims to rejuvenate the water bodies in Mulanthuruthy Block Panchayath. Other officials from Panchayath also addressed the gathering.

Proposal of New Block “Thanal” at Mithram Special School

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST submitted a detailed Project Report on the design of a new block for the MITHRAM special school named “Thanal” to the school authorities by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Preethi Thekkath on 2nd December 2022. The proposed block “Thanal” is for rehabilitating their paralyzed inmates in their premises. The plan, design, and cost estimation of the proposed block were done by the students of the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST.

MISSION FREE FLOW

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST had a meeting with officials of Mulanthuruthy BlockPanchayath on July 6th,2022in regards to the project‘ Mission Free Flow’. Representatives of each panchayat communicated the problems in their wards with respect to the water flow rate. The Civil Engineering Department is entrusted with this project which helps to rejuvenate the free flows in the various water bodies. This project aims to identify the water flow obstructions in watercourses and to redesign the flow of drains to attain normal flow. It also focuses on the tourism possibilities in those areas.

 MITHRAM SPECIAL SCHOOL VISIT

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST visited MITHRAM Special School and had discussions with their officials regarding the planning and design of the new block as part of community service on 10/03/2022.

Rebuild Kerala Project

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST is selected as one of the agencies for the second tier quality management system for the Rebuild Kerala Initiative of Govt. of Kerala for the rehabilitation of roads under LSGD. Department is actively involved in the quality control system of RKI projects to ensure the quality of roads. Lab facilities in the department are also being used for various stages of quality testing of materials for various projects under the scheme. Department is privileged to undertake this consultancy work.

Pollution Abatement Project for Periyar river

Faculty and Students of Department of Civil engineering, TIST visited the various stretches of Periyar river on 12/01/2021 as part of “Pollution Abatement Project for Periyar river” which is carried out in Collaboration between Water Resource Department & Higher Education Institutions. Irrigation Department officials also accompanied to provide the details of each stretch.

SAMPOORNA JALASURAKSHA MISSION

The Department of Civil Engineering is happy to be a part of Sampoorna Jalaparishodhana by providing Technical assistance to Kerala Government’s prestigious project “Complete Water Safety Mission” at Amballoor Panchayath. Water samples were collected from different sources and tested. The project gives exposure for students to water testing and checking the suitability of water for drinking purposes.

REBUILD KERALA

The Rebuild Kerala Initiative, (RKI), presents a unique approach to rebuilding the State after the disastrous flood of 2018 that affected almost all the parts of Kerala. Department of Civil Engineering of TIST is happy to go hand in hand with the Govt of Kerala for achieving the aim to ensure a resilient recovery and development pathway for a Nava Keralam. The department has extended the support by conducting survey and soil investigation of various LSGD roads in Ernakulam District, for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the same. Surveys were conducted atChendamangalam, Kadungalloor, Kizhakkambalam, Vadavucode, Kadamakudy and Kumbalangygramapanchayaths.

SURVEY FOR REHABILITATION OF STREET VENDORS AT PIRAVOM  and MARADU MUNICIPALITY

To develop Piravom and Maradu Municipality as a street vendor-free zone, the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST had carried out a road survey at Piravom and Maradu town to provide rehabilitation of street vendors.

PRADHAN MANTRI AWAS YOJANA (PMAY)

Submitted project report on the plan, analysis, design, and detailing of working women’s hostel with daycare facility at Mulamthuruthy Block Panchayat under PMAY scheme. TIST Civil Department is the technical supporter of MBP.
