BIM BOOTCAMP 3.0 – Report

The Department of Civil Engineering, TIST, successfully conducted BIM Bootcamp 3.0, a three-day hands-on training program from 2nd to 4th March 2026 at the Civil CAD Lab. The sessions were led by Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu, BIM Facilitator, trained under KTU and IIIC.

The training was conducted for S4 and S8 Civil Engineering students, focusing on practical exposure to Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools and real-world applications. Through interactive, lab-based sessions, students enhanced their technical skills and gained industry-relevant knowledge. During the interactive sessions, participants were exposed to practical applications of BIM tools along with real-world project case studies. The workshop emphasized how BIM enhances communication among stakeholders, minimizes project risks, and improves overall project lifecycle management. The program significantly improved students technical competency, industry readiness, and confidence, making it a valuable learning experience.

TECHNICAL SESSION IN ONLINE MODE ON DURABLE CONCRETE

The department of civil engineering in association with ICI Student chapter and ISTE Toc H Student chapter organized a technical session in online mode on durable concrete on 2nd March 2026 at Amrutham Hall. The talk was delivered by Dr. Liji Anna Mathew, Associate Professor AISAT, highlighting the critical role of durability in ensuring the long-term performance and service life of concrete structures. The session emphasized that durability is not solely dependent on strength, but also on permeability control and environmental exposure conditions. Referring to the provisions of IS 456 by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the resource person explained how exposure conditions influence the selection of materials, mix proportions, and construction practices to achieve durable concrete.  A case study of the Chetuva Bridge was presented to illustrate practical challenges and lessons learned in achieving durable concrete under real site conditions. The session concluded with an interactive discussion where participants clarified doubts related to mix design and field execution practices. The session was attended by second year, third year and fourth year students of civil Department.

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON “HYDRAULIC MODELING AND SIMULATION OF WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS USING EPANET

A one-day workshop on “Hydraulic Modeling and Simulation of Water Distribution Systems using EPANET” was organized by the ISTE Toc H Student Chapter in association with the Department of Civil Engineering. The session was conducted by Dr. Nishida A, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, FISAT on 17h March 2026.

The workshop was attended by S4 and S8 B.Tech Civil Engineering students and focused on providing practical exposure to hydraulic modeling techniques. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of water distribution systems and gained hands-on experience in using EPANET software for simulation and analysis.

The session enhanced students’ understanding of real-world applications in water supply engineering and equipped them with essential skills for designing and analyzing efficient distribution networks.

Technical Talk on Attainment of Sustainable Development Goals for a Better Future – A Civil Engineering Perspective”

A technical talk on the topic “Attainment of Sustainable Development Goals for a Better Future – A Civil Engineering Perspective” was organized by the ASCE Student Chapter, on 7th March 2026 at Amrutham Hall. The resource person for the session was Dr. Lekshmi M. S., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Chennai. She delivered an insightful talk on the role of civil engineering in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly focusing on SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production. During the session, the speaker explained the importance of utilizing locally available natural resources and agricultural wastes in construction to promote sustainability. She discussed the development of alternative binders using natural raw materials such as rice husk ash, coconut husk, coir fibre, cashew nut shell liquid, and cow dung. These materials can be effectively used in earth-based mortar and plaster as sustainable alternatives to conventional cement-based materials. The use of agricultural residues and livestock waste helps in reducing waste disposal problems, conserving natural resources, and minimizing environmental pollution.  The session concluded with an interactive question and answer session, followed by Vote of Thanks. The talk provided valuable insights into the role of civil engineers in promoting sustainable development and responsible resource management. Asst. Prof. Anue Marry Mathew and Asst. Prof. Christy Francis Lonth coordinated the technical talk.

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON “INTEGRATED PROJECT DELIVERY THROUGH BIM”

The ISTE Toc H Student Chapter in association with the Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science & Technology organized a one-day workshop on “Integrated Project Delivery through BIM” at the Civil CAD Lab on 5th March 2026. The session was conducted by Dr. Kishor P, Founder and Managing Director of Habilete Learning Solutions Pvt Ltd and President of ASCE ISSR.

The workshop aimed to introduce students to the concept of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and its implementation using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in modern construction projects. Dr. Kishor P provided valuable insights into collaborative project delivery methods, digital construction workflows, and the role of BIM in improving efficiency, coordination, and sustainability in infrastructure development.

During the interactive session, participants were exposed to practical applications of BIM tools and real-world project case studies. The workshop also highlighted how BIM facilitates better communication among stakeholders, reduces project risks, and enhances project lifecycle management.

The program witnessed active participation from S8 civil engineering students, who benefited from the expert guidance and industry perspective shared during the session.

REPORT ON BLUEPRINTS OF PROGRESS 3.0 

The ASCE Student Chapter of Toc H Institute of Science & Technology (TIST) organized “Blueprints of Progress 3.0 – Insights in Civil Engineering” on 27th March 2026 at Amrutham Hall as part of the final year B.Tech project presentations. The event showcased innovative, research-oriented, and practical solutions addressing real-world challenges in civil engineering through selected projects, including studies on carbon fiber reinforced concrete, traffic performance improvement at Vyttila Junction using PTV VISSIM, and perception-based Level of Service evaluation. The programme provided valuable insights into emerging trends and ideas in the field, while also offering students an opportunity to enhance their public speaking and technical communication skills and receive constructive feedback from faculty and peers. The event was attended by S4, S6 students and faculty members.

Colloquium – 3 Day Webinar Series (Techshila ’26)

The Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, organized a three-day online webinar series titled “Colloquium” as part of Techshila ’26. The program was organized by the ASCE Student Chapter and ICI Student Chapter of TIST. The webinar series aimed to provide students with exposure to professional development, emerging technologies, and innovative advancements relevant to the field of engineering.

The sessions were conducted from 23rd February to 25th February 2026, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM through an online platform. The event witnessed active participation from students of various engineering disciplines and was also eligible for KTU activity points.

DAY 1 (23rd February 2026): Code Your Confidence: The Engineer’s Success Lab

The first session of the webinar series was delivered by Dr. Fabil Varghese, Associate Professor and Consultant Psychologist at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology. The session focused on the psychology of engineIV_S8_DAMers and the importance of confidence in professional growth.

DAY 2 (24th February 2026): Future-Ready Engineers: Leveraging AI Across All Domains

The second session was handled by Dr. J. V. Bibal Benifa, Associate Dean at IIIT Kottayam. The talk focused on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in engineering and everyday life.

DAY 3 (25th February 2026): Structural Behaviour, Buildability and Sustainability of 3D Concrete Printing

The third session was delivered by Dr. Nivin Philip, Professor at Saintgits College of Engineering. The talk focused on 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) and its potential to transform the construction industry.

Workshop on Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning in Civil Engineering

As part of ADVAY 2026 workshop on “Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning in Civil Engineering” was conducted on 13th  February 2026 at Amurtham Hall at Toc H Institute of Science & Technology. The session was delivered by Assoc. Prof. (Dr.) Preetha Prabhakaran from the Department of Civil Engineering. Civil Engineering students from all semesters actively participated in the workshop.

The session began at 1:20 PM with an introduction highlighting the concept of smart cities and the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in modern infrastructure development. Dr. Preetha Prabhakaran provided an overview of the evolution and history of AI and explained the distinction between AI and ML. She also discussed key applications of these technologies in civil engineering, including Structural Health Monitoring, development of self-repairing materials, and their role in civil engineering management, particularly in subway management and urban transportation systems.

The speaker further highlighted emerging trends, future opportunities, and the scope of AI and ML in shaping the future of civil engineering practices. The session concluded at 2:05 PM with an interactive discussion, providing participants with valuable insights into the integration of AI and ML in civil engineering applications.

One Day Workshop on STAAD.Pro 2025

The Department of Civil Engineering successfully organized a One Day Workshop on STAAD.Pro 2025 on 16th January 2026, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.The session was conducted by Mr. Thishyak S, Senior Engineer – CAD & BIM, InterCAD Systems Pvt. Ltd. The workshop covered structural modeling, analysis, and design concepts using STAAD. Pro, with hands-on demonstrations and practical problem-solving sessions. The resource person explained the analysis and design of a framed structure and a multi-storied building, showing how codal provisions are already available within the software. Students were taught basic steps such as creating the model, assigning materials and loads, performing analysis and checking design results. The workshop helped students improve their software skills and understanding of practical structural design.

Workshop on “Introduction to Kerala Building Rules and Plan Submission through the K-Smart Platform”

One Day Workshop on “Introduction to Kerala Building Rules and Plan Submission through the K-Smart Platform”, held on 09/01/2026, was organised by the Department of Civil Engineering and led by Mr. M.A.M Azhar, Structural Engineer and Managing Director of Anversons Design Planning & Services. The session provided comprehensive insights into the Kerala Panchayat Building Rules (KPBR) 2019, highlighting licensing awareness and the professional responsibilities of engineers and architects. It covered the classification of buildings based on occupancy and detailed the preparation of statutory drawings, including site plans, layout requirements, setbacks, parking provisions, sanitation facilities, and mandatory documents for plan submission. The workshop also traced the evolution of plan submission systems from manual applications to digital platforms such as SANKETHAM and IBPMS, before concluding with an in-depth introduction to the K-Smart platform. Special emphasis was placed on the building permit layers matrix, explaining the organization of drawings and data into predefined digital layers to ensure regulatory compliance, enhance scrutiny efficiency, and facilitate faster and more transparent building permit approvals through the K-Smart web portal.

Talk on Sustainable & Disaster-Resilient Urban Transport Systems

Dr. M. P. Ramnavas, Director (Projects), Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL), delivered a highly inspiring motivational expert session on “Sustainable & Disaster-Resilient Urban Transport Systems” for S6 and S8 B.Tech Civil Engineering students of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST). The session highlighted major KMRL initiatives such as Kochi Metro Rail, Kochi Water Metro, feeder bus services, multi-modal integration, and promotion of non-motorized transport for sustainable urban mobility. He also explained key sustainability practices adopted during construction, including energy-efficient designs, material optimization, water conservation, and green-certified stations, along with disaster-resilient strategies like flood-adaptive planning, robust structural design, and advanced safety systems. The talk effectively motivated students by linking classroom learning with real-world infrastructure projects and inspiring them towards careers in sustainable and resilient urban development.

Civil Engineering Students Attended MATLAB Training

Civil Engineering S1 students of TIST actively participated in the technical training programme on “MATLAB – A Hands-on Journey Through Simulation and Computational Thinking.”The MATLAB training was organized by the Department of Electronics, TIST, and delivered by Mr. Dhanoop Dhanapal. Application Engineer, Corel Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The session introduced students to essential computational and simulation skills relevant to modern engineering applications. Many students successfully completed the assigned MATLAB course during the training and received their certificates.

Technical Talk on Structural Engineering: Relating Theory

A technical session led by Rev. Fr. Dr. Bennet Kuriakose, Assistant Professor and Dean (Research) at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Palai, provided valuable insights into the modern challenges and innovations in civil engineering. He discussed key issues such as material scarcity, cost escalation, safety, sustainability, and complex design demands, emphasizing the need for technological adoption and multidisciplinary collaboration. The session covered common construction problems like soil settlement, foundation failures, and water seepage, along with a detailed overview of various footing types and their suitability. Highlighting the integration of Artificial Intelligence in structural engineering, Dr. Bennet illustrated its role in predictive maintenance, design optimization, and smart infrastructure. Through engaging case studies, including a unique floating home project, he demonstrated how innovative and sustainable engineering practices can effectively address real-world construction challenges.

Vidyadeeksha ’25 (One Week Induction Program, Btech 2025-’29 Batch)

The Student Induction Programme was held from 13th to 20th August 2025, designed to orient first-year students to the academic and cultural environment of the college. The programme featured proficiency modules in English, Mathematics, and Computer Programming, along with sessions on Universal Human Values, IEDC, and creative arts. Students benefitted from technical talks by experts including Dr. Preetha Prabhakaran and Dr. Kishore P, as well as alumni interactions with Ms. Sneha Mole Jacob, Mr. Sreehari K R, and Jobin Jose.

As part of the programme, awareness sessions on Traffic Rules and Regulations and Anti-Ragging and the Ill Effects of Substance Abuse were conducted on 19th August 2025 at the Indira Gandhi Open Auditorium, TIST. The session on traffic rules was led by Mr. Adarsh Kumar G. Nair, Joint RTO (Retd.), who emphasized the importance of road safety and adherence to regulations. This was followed by an insightful session by Dr. Rajesh Kocheril (I.N Retd.), Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Convener of the Anti-Ragging & Anti-Drugs Cell, who highlighted the harmful impacts of substance abuse and the significance of a ragging-free campus.

In addition to these sessions, interactive activities, lab visits, extracurricular events, and mentorship interactions ensured a balanced blend of academic learning, personal awareness, and holistic development, making the induction programme a meaningful beginning to the students’ academic journey.

Alumni Interaction

As part of the Student Induction Program 2025, the Department of Civil Engineering hosted two insightful alumni interaction sessions.

The first session, held on 13th August 2025, featured Ms. Sneha Mole Jacob, First Grade Overseer, MVIP Division No. 4, Piravom Irrigation Department. She shared her professional journey in the irrigation sector, offering valuable insights into career growth, skill development, and real-world applications of civil engineering. The interactive session motivated the new batch of students and provided them with practical perspectives on opportunities in government service.

The second session, Interaction with Prominent Alumni, brought together distinguished graduates who are now leading their own ventures in the construction and interiors sector. The panel included Mr. Sreehari K R (Managing Director, Civicons), Mr. Jobin Jose (Managing Partner, SOL Interiors), and Mr. Muhsin Majeed (Managing Partner, SOL Interiors). They shared experiences from their entrepreneurial journeys, highlighting challenges, opportunities, and the importance of technical knowledge, adaptability, and innovation. The alumni encouraged students to actively explore entrepreneurial paths, emphasized sustainable practices, and assured their mentorship support for budding engineers.

Together, these sessions strengthened the bond between alumni and the institution, inspiring students to pursue excellence, innovation, and diverse career opportunities in civil engineering.

Technical Talk-Building the Future: The Crucial Role of BIM in Modern Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a technical talk on “Building the Future: The Crucial Role of BIM in Modern Civil Engineering” on 18th August 2025 at Amrutham Hall. The session was led by Dr. Kishor P, Managing Director of Habilette Learning Solutions, who highlighted the growing importance of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in modern construction practices. He emphasized how BIM improves efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration in engineering projects, while also encouraging students to explore the vast career opportunities available in this domain.

Technical Talk-Exciting Careers in Civil Engineering

As part of the First-Year B.Tech Induction Programme 2025, a technical talk on “Exciting Careers in Civil Engineering” was delivered by Dr. Preetha Prabhakaran on 14th August 2025. The session provided insights into the diverse career opportunities available in the field of civil engineering, ranging from core construction to emerging domains such as sustainability and digital technologies. Dr. Preetha emphasized the importance of skill development, adaptability, and lifelong learning for professional success. The talk inspired students to explore the vast potential of civil engineering and motivated them to pursue their academic journey with passion and commitment.

4thINTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIVE TRENDS IN ENGINEERING FOR SUSTAINABILITY (April2nd, 3rd and 4th 2025)

The fourth International Conference on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability, organized by the Civil Engineering Department of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, was inaugurated by Dr. Rahimi A Rahman, Associate Professor, Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The three-day international conference, jointly presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and Habilitate Learning Solutions, was conducted in a hybrid mode on April 2, 3, and 4. The event was presided over by Er. C. S. Varghese, President, Toc H Public School Society, with special address by Dr. K. S. Anandh, Assistant Professor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, and felicitations from Dr. Anil Joseph, Managing Director, Geostructurals (P) Ltd., Mr. Kurian Thomas, Manager, Toc H Public School Society, Mr. Madhu Cherian, Secretary, Toc H Public School Society, Dr. Kamal Laksiri, Project Director, Moragolla Hydropower,  Dr. Sunitha K. Nayar ,COO, Global Sanitation Centre of Excellence, IIT Palakkad, Assoc. Prof. (Dr.) Deepa Elizabeth George, Vice Principal, TIST and Prof. (Dr.) Elson John, ASCE Secretary, India Section Southern Region & HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, MA College of Engineering.  Professor Dr. Vasudev R., HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, TIST provided a brief overview of the conference. Prizes were distributed for the winners of the ICI Concrete Cube Testing competition held on March 6th. First prize worth Rs 10k was won by Albertian Institute of Science and Technology and Second prize worth Rs 5k was won by Toc H Institute of Science and Technology. With 15 parallel sessions, 86 paper presentations, and three keynote speeches, the conference was concluded on 3rdApril 2025 with a keynote address by Dr. Brajesh Kr. Dubey, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur

Blueprints of Progress 2.0

ASCE student chapter TIST organized Blueprints of progress 2.0 which included the research presentations of final year civil engineering students. It involved an insight to innovative and informative ideas of the students. By presenting their findings, students not only gained valuable experience in public speaking and technical communication but also received constructive feedback from peers and faculty. S6 students and faculty members attended the program.

BIM Bootcamp 2.0: 3 Days Hands-On Learning

Three-days hands-on training programon BIM Bootcamp 2.0, conducted successfully from 3rd to 5th March 2025, aimed at equipping 27 Civil Engineering students of S8 with advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) skills. Led by Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu, who trained under KTU and the Indian Institute of Infrastructure & Construction, the workshop provided immersive learning experiences focused on real-world BIM applications. This initiative enhanced students’ technical expertise, strengthened their industry readinessand significantly improved their placement opportunities in the evolving field of digital construction technology.

Talk on VR and AR in the Construction Industry

A technical talk on VR and AR in the construction industry was conducted the department on February 24, 2025. The talk led byTechmaghi, which later evolved to a group discussion with the final-year Civil Engineering students. The conversations centered around the current applications of VR technology, its significance in the construction sector, and its historical evolution. The importance of VR and AR in construction industry was highlighted, live VR headgear experience as well as projects were exhibited. Various courses and training programs offered by Techmaghi were also discussed, designed to equip students with the skills needed to excel in this field.

Technical Forum on The Topic “Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beams and CFRP Strengthening Techniques”

Department hosted a technical forum on the topic“Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beams and CFRP Strengthening Techniques” on October 25, 2024.The session was taken by Dr. Preetha Prabhakan,Asst. Prof, Department of Civil Engineering. The session provided an in-depth knowledge on the analysis of thestructural behavior of RC beams which are flexurally strengthened with various Carbon FiberReinforced Polymer (CFRP) configurations, highlighting advancements in structuraldurability and resilience. The session introduced simplified analytical methods to predict theflexural performance of FRP-strengthened RC beams, emphasizing both accuracy andpractical application. The forum offered valuable insights in advanced structuralreinforcement methods adopted in construction industry.

39th National Convention of Civil Engineers

Students and faculty of the department participated in the 39th National Conference held on 17th and 18th of October, 2024 Organized by the Institution of Engineers (India) – Kochi Local Centre. The conference provided an exceptional platform to our students to showcase their innovative projects and engage with industry experts. Students presented three pioneering projects at the expo, including a safety helmet for workers and tiles and bricks made from waste products,demonstrating their creativity and dedication to sustainable solutions. Additionally, they attended inspiring talks presented by experts in the field, expanded their knowledge and networking with peers. The conference offered invaluable opportunities for our students to interact with renowned experts, explore cutting-edge technologies and trends, and foster industry connections. This enriching experience will undoubtedly contribute to their growth and development.

Talk on “Strategies for Excelling as a Civil Engineering Entrepreneur”

On   September 30th2024, a highly informative interactive talk was held to guide the students regarding various opportunities in the field ofCivil Engineering. The session was handled by Er. Abhilash Joy, Managing Director, STUBA Engineering Consultancy.  The talk provided valuable insights into the journey of becoming a successful Civil Engineering entrepreneur. In the session various points about identifying opportunities, planning, financial management, leadership &team management, sustainability and environmental responsibility etc. were discussed.

Two Day Workshop on Emerging trends in Resilient Infrastructure

Faculty and students of S5 CE and S7 CE attended a two-day workshop on “Emerging trends in Resilient Infrastructure” organized by ICI, Kochi Chapter on 27th and 28thSeptember 2024 at Gokulam Park Convention Centre, Kaloor, Kerala.  Session covered invited talks on Engineering Gigantic Statues, Concreting challenges in Infrastructural Projects, Exercise in SustainableInfrastructure, Structural Health monitoring in Bridge Structures, Precast Concrete Construction Techniques etc. It also contained panel discussions on Necessity of vertical growth in Indian Construction Industry and Prefab Technologies.

Seminar on Affordable Housing: Green Building Approach

A seminar on Affordable Housing: Green Building Approach was conducted as part of Udyama 1.0 on 26th September 2024 at 10:30 am.Resource person for the event was Ms. AshiquaSulthana, Lead consultant Tropical Greenovation Cluster. The participants included Educators, Engineering students, Industrial representatives etc. MsAshiquaSulthana provided invaluable insights into effective strategies for implementing sustainable building practices. Her expertise in the provision of GRIHA accreditation was remarkable and gave a really valuable session on it.  The event was a resounding success, fostering engaging discussions and generating valuable insights.

Talk on “Future Civil Engineers: Are you at Right Place”

ASCE student chapter organized a webinar on “Future Civil Engineers: Are you at Right Place” (online) on 12/09/202 4.Dr.Sunitha K Nayar, Professor at Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Engineering Centre (ESSENCE), IIT Palakkad was the speaker. The talk was based on the opportunities for civil engineers in the future. Speaker talked about present and future of Civil Engineering. It includes technical advancements, Sustainable practices etc.The future of civil engineering is bright, but it requires a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. The talk was highly beneficial for the aspiring civil engineers. S1, S3 and S5 students attended the talk.

Talk on “GIS-Driven Solutions for Advanced Engineering Projects”

A talk on “GIS-Driven Solutions for Advanced Engineering Projects” was organized as part ofTechnical Forum, on 30thAugust 2024. Asst. Prof. Chithra C. J, Department of Civil Engineering has covered various applications of GIS in Civil Engineering, focusing on how it can be leveraged to address challenges in Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering etc. Additionally, participants were introduced to QGIS, a powerful open-source software for GIS, providing valuable insights into its capabilities.

Talk on Awareness of Rights and Duties of Citizens: Building Civic Sense for a Better Tomorrow

On 12th August 2024, Adv. conducted a talk on “Awareness of Rights and Duties of Citizens: Building Civic Sense for a Better Tomorrow” for the S3, S5, and S7 students. Santhy S (Deputy Chief Defence Counsel, Legal Aid Defence Counsel System, Ernakulam). The session focused on the importance of understanding fundamental rights and duties as citizens, emphasizing how these contribute to the strength of our democracy. Adv. Santhi also discussed the significance of building civic sense among Engineers as a citizen thus contributing to a better society and nation. The session was conducted at Amrutham Hall of the Department.

An online talk on Sustainable Light Weight Beam was organized by ASCE student chapter on 02/08/2024. Dr. Kavitha P E, Associate Professor, FISAT shared her valuable thoughts on this session. The talk focused on innovative approaches on beam design that adhere to the principles of sustainability, particularly the 5R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Redesign. Dr. Kavitha discussed both conventional and emerging methods of beam construction, highlighting the use of lightweight materials made from recycled plastic laminate incorporated into cold-formed steel (CFS) structures. This innovative approach not only utilizes recycled materials but also enhances the structural performance of beams. The webinar emphasized the integration of plastic lumber with cold-formed sheets as a viable alternative to traditional materials, aiming to improve sustainability in construction.The talk successfully highlighted the potential of sustainable lightweight beams to solve modern construction challenges, underscoring the importance of integrating sustainability into engineering practices. Participants gained valuable insights into how these advancements can contribute to a more sustainable future in construction, encouraging further exploration of innovative materials and methods in the field.  S7, S5 students and faculties attended the talk.

International Seminar on Rising Scope of Data Analysis in Construction

 On 5th July 2024, the Department of Civil Engineering conducted an International Seminar titled “Rising Scope of Data Analysis in Construction” for final year B.Tech students. The event featured esteemed speaker Mr. Jithin A Shaji, Vinci Construction, England who highlighted the transformative potential of data analysis in modern construction practices. Topics covered included predictive analytics for project management, big data applications in construction planning, and the role of digital construction in improving construction efficiency. The seminar provided students with valuable insights into current trends and future opportunities in construction planning, importance of data-driven decision-making etc. in construction projects.

Talk on ‘Navigating Excellence: Empowering Future Civil Engineers with Career Insights and Essential Skills’

As part of ASCE Students Chapter activities, a technical talk on ‘Navigating Excellence: Empowering Future Civil Engineers with career insights and essential skills’ by Mr. Kishore,Director, Habilete Learning Solutions Private Ltd,ASCE advisor was conducted on 9th April, 2024 at 1:30 pm in association with Habilete Learning Solutions for final year students. The talk started with the importance of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in current scenario. Students were able to know that BIM increases productivity; efficiency gains during a project’s design and construction phases.Students were able to explain the contribution of BIM in productivity, efficiency and in project design for construction phases.

Talk on Application of Special Concrete on Nuclear Power Projects

An online talk titled “Application of Special Concrete on Nuclear Power Projects”was organised by the Department in association with ASCE Student Chapter, TIST on 03/04/2024. Asst Prof. D. Deva Raja Subha from the Ponjesly college of Engineering, Nagercoil was the speaker.The webinar began by introducing various types of special concrete and its practical uses in the real world. Then the topic diverted to the functioning of the Nuclear Power Plants and the key components of the Nuclear Power Generation Plant. The different types of Civil Engineering structures that can be used for the project were addressed and how these structures are chosen with respect to the site conditions were explained. The webinar also gave a brief insight into the working of nuclear power generation and the areas where in special concrete is used for the safety and stability of the structures using 3D model Diagram. The session concluded by a quick conclusion of the presentation followed by the Question-and-Answer Session.

Building Green Futures: Plastic Reuse in Construction

Department in partnership with IIC, marked Science Day on March 28, 2024, at St. George High School. Dr. Vasudev R led a seminar titled “Building Green Futures: Plastic Reuse in Construction,” spotlighting plastic’s environmental potential. Students delved into innovative projects using recycled plastics, igniting enthusiasm for sustainable building practices. The event concluded with a resounding call to action, inspiring students to spearhead eco-friendly initiatives and steer construction towards a greener, more sustainable future.

BIM Bootcamp:3 Days Hands-On Learning

Department organised 3 Days Bootcamp on Building Information Modelling (BIM) from 21st-23rd March 2024. Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu, Department of Civil Engineering, TIST, who had undergone training under KTU & Indian Institute of Infrastructure & Construction was the BIM facilitator. The BIM Bootcamp was for S8 students and total of 33 students attended and completed the training successfully. Hands-on training like BIM shall greatly benefit students, especially those who are opting for higher placement opportunities. It offers practical experience and exposure to cutting-edge technology in the field. Such initiatives help students develop crucial skills that are directly applicable in their future careers.

Workshop on Concrete Mix Design

Department organized an insightful workshop on Concrete Mix Design on the 5th of March 2024in collaboration with the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) Kerala Kochi Chapter. Er. Shyju Nair, CEO, DH Academy initiated the workshop by emphasizing the importance of achieving workable and non-segregating fresh concrete. The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of workable and non-segregating fresh concrete, the characteristics of hard concrete, and the influence of mix design on strength and durability. Practical tips and techniques for producing a well-balanced mix that is easy to handle and place were shared. Sir has elaborated on the role of key components like cement, aggregates, and water in achieving the desired compressive strength and long-term durability of concrete structures. The workshop featured an interactive session where participants had the opportunity to engage with Er. Shyju Nair, seeking clarification and discussing practical scenarios. The lively Q&A segment enhanced the learning experience, encouraging active participation from the audience.

Talk on Opportunities in CRIP Sector for Architects

On Monday, 19th February 2024, the Department organized a seminar focusing on “Opportunities in CRIP Sector for Architects.” The seminar aimed to enlighten final and pre-final year students about career prospects and growth avenues in the Construction, Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Project Management (CRIP) sector. Dr. KV Prasad, Programme Director of the School of Industry Relations and Executive Education at NICMAR Hyderabad, served as the distinguished speaker for the event, sharing valuable insights and expertise in the field. Dr. KV Prasad emphasized the pivotal role of architects in shaping the built environment and contributing to sustainable urban development. He elaborated on the diverse career opportunities available to architects within the CRIP sector, spanning project management, urban planning, real estate development, infrastructure design, and construction management. The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Prasad, seeking guidance on career pathways, skill development, and industry trends.

The session was organized for final and pre-final year students interested in exploring the role of digital technologies in revolutionizing the construction sector. Dr. Mahesh Balasubramani, Programme Director of Advanced Construction Management at NICMAR Hyderabad, served as the keynote speaker, providing insights into the integration of digital tools and techniques in construction practices.Dr. Mahesh Balasubramani commenced the webinar by highlighting the significance of digitization in modernizing the construction industry and addressing its evolving challenges. He emphasized the transformative impact of digital technologies on project management, design, and execution processes. Through engaging presentations and real-world examples, Dr. Balasubramani elucidated various aspects of digitization and its implications for construction professionals.

A webinar titled “Recent Innovations and Modern Methods in the Construction Industry” was organized by the Department on 19/02/2024.  Dr. R Sathish Kumar, Professor and Dean of School of Construction & Technology at NICMAR Hyderabad, was the keynote speaker. The session aimed to shed light on the latest advancements and emerging trends in the construction sector, exploring innovative approaches and technologies shaping the industry’s landscape.Dr. R Sathish Kumar commenced the webinar by providing an overview of the current status of the construction industry and the need for innovation to address its evolving challenges. He emphasized the importance of embracing modern methods to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and safety in construction projects. Through insightful presentations and case studies, Dr. Kumar elucidated various innovative techniques and technologies revolutionizing the construction sector.

Mr. Prem G Prakash, Hazard Analyst, Kerala State Disaster Management Authoritywas the speaker.Mr. Prem G Prakash highlighted how Kerala Government has managed the flood happened on 2018and also explained all the Major disaster events in Kerala in the last 10 years& various new technologies in Disaster Management.163 Participants registered for the webinar andFaculties and students from various department and institutes attended the talk.

A technical talk on “Interview Success Mantras” by Mr. Sasidharan Thettikuzhy, Retired Human Resource Officer, United Nations held on November 10th, 2023 at Amrutham Hall, Department of Civil Engineering, provided valuable insights into the strategies and key points for achieving success in job interviews. Effective Resume Crafting that highlights one’s skills and achievements concisely was the key point of the talk. The speaker shared practical strategies for excelling in job interviews, including effective communication, body language, and preparation techniques. Leveraging his experience with the United Nations, resource person provided insights into global hiring practices, shedding light on what multinational organizations look for in potential candidates.The talk provided valuable insights into the intricacies of job interviews, especially from a global perspective. Practical tips and real-world examples made the content relatable and applicable to various professional scenarios. Talk on “Interview Success Mantras” was a resounding success.

Talk on Understanding Construction Drawings

The technical talk on “Understanding Construction Drawings” by Mr. Jackson, CEO of SitExpert, held on November 24th ,2023 at Amrutham Hall, Department of Civil Engineering, provided a comprehensive insight into the significance of understanding construction drawings in the field of Civil Engineering. Mr. Jackson, a distinguished expert and CEO of SitExpert, brought a wealth of experience and knowledge in the day to day activities of construction industry. The key points discussed are the importance of Construction Drawings and Elements of Construction Drawings. The speaker gave insight on various elements found in construction drawings, explaining the significance of each, including architectural, structural, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) drawings. Mr. Jackson’s practical examples and emphasis on leveraging technology resonated well with the audience, making the complex subject matter more accessible. The Department of Civil Engineering extends its appreciation to Mr. Jackson for delivering an insightful talk on Understanding Construction Drawings. Webinar on Traditional Architecture of Kerala


Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organized a Webinar (online)on 20th April 2023in association with ASCE student chapter under probation on Traditional Architecture of Kerala as part of the Techno-cultural fest Advay. The session was handled by Subhash Varma C R, Assoc. Professor, TKM Kollam. The webinar explored the unique features of Kerala’s architectural heritage, preservation challenges, etc. The participants gained valuable insights into the historical and cultural significance of Kerala’s traditional architecture and were inspired to contribute towards its preservation and promotion.

3rdInternational Conference (KSCSTE sponsored) on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability (ICITES- 2023)

The 3rd International Conference (KSCSTE SPONSORED) on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability (ICITES- 2023) was organized by Civil Engineering Department (Hybrid mode)from 11/04/2023 to 13/04/2023. Dr. Kamal LaksiriLoku, Project Director, Maragolla Hydropower Project, Srilanka, inaugurated the conference and delivered the inaugural address. The theme for the conference was “Sustainable Built Environment”. The conference has received 85 abstracts from India and outside based on various themes. 25 reviewers from various organizations other than faculty members of CE department reviewed and selected the papers for presentation. Day 1 started with a keynote address by Dr. Kamal LaksiriLokuon the topic “Innovative Trend in Engineering for Sustainability” and emphasized on the aspects of Water Sustainability, Construction, and Energy sustainability. The conference was enlightened with 6 keynote addresses on topics Offshore Wind Energy Harnessing Systems and its future, Good Construction Practices and Features of New-Generation Concrete, Characteristics of In-filled Frames with Short Column Effect, Advanced Satellite/ UAV Image Processing and Remote Sensing Techniques with Sustainable approaches, low-cost housing and possibilities of exploring sustainability. The resource persons were Dr.RameezaMoideen, Dr. Vasudev R, Mr. Pradeep Sivanantham, Dr. Raju Aedla, and Dr. K N Lakshmikandhan from various organizations. The paper presentations were carried out with 11 technical sessions in the presence of chairs and co-chairs on various themes. Best papers were selected from each theme and certificates were given to the presenters. Poster presentations were also carried out on these days prepared by the presenters. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners of the Concrete Cube Test competition held as part of the conference. The conference was concluded with a summary by Dr. Vasudev R, HOD and convenor, ICITES 2023.

Faculty Development Program on Emerging Trends in Energy-Efficient Building Construction

A five-day Faculty development program was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST on “Emerging Trends in Energy Efficient Building Construction” sponsored by KTU from 12/12/2022 to 16/12/2022 in offline mode. The program intended to provide a platform for faculty and professional engineers to discuss the acute problems faced in the construction of energy-efficient buildings and to upgrade their knowledge with the latest technologies.Dr. C G Nandakumar, Retd. Prof., Department of Ship Technology, CUSAT inaugurated the FDP and delivered the inaugural address. Experts from various fields discussed topics such as Design Aspects on Energy Conservation in Building Construction, Cost-effectiveConstruction -A Key to Energy Efficient Building Construction (special emphasis on bamboo and filler slab), Exploring Sustainability through Construction Materials and Technology, Introduction to Energy Efficiency & Sustainability in Architecture, Construction Techniques for Sustainable housing, Forensic Investigation for Sustainability Issues in Structure, Energy Efficiency Building: A Life cycle Approach. A site visit was conducted to the Good Earth Modern Times construction site at Kalamasseri on 16th December 2023. It is a green building with a community of 40 vertical villas that offer4-bedrooms units with both duplex and single-level options. The Green roofs, and vegetable vertical gardens are aimed at improving the quality and variety of everyday life in contemporary cities.

World Pollution Prevention DayWebinar

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST celebrated World Pollution Prevention Day on December 2nd, 2022 to create awareness about environmental pollution and its bad effects on our health and the ecosystem. Er. Sreelakshmy P B, Environmental Engineer, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, Ernakulam shared her insight on the four major goals of National Pollution Prevention Day as Raising awareness about rising levels of air pollution, educating people on how to manage and control industrial disasters, making people aware of the importance of pollution and methods for preventing industrial pollution caused by human error pollution control measures.

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST organized a motivational session by a Successful Entrepreneur Er. Arun K Biju, (Alumnus, M Tech 2016-2018 Batch) Founder & Managing Director of Dwalled Infrastructure on 4th November 2022 in association with IIC and IEDC, TIST. The session inspired the students and young entrepreneurs and gave them insight to face&overcome the challenges and difficulties that may come across in startups.

A talk on the topic “Career in Civil Engineering was organized by the Civil Engineering Department in association with IIC, TIST on 21st October 2022. The session was handled by Mrs. Preetha Prabhakaran, Asst. Prof. Civil Engineering Department, TIST.The talk was truly informative and an eye-opener for all young aspirants. B Tech final year students and all faculty members attended the function.

Technical Forum on Holistic Development and the Role of Education

Department of Civil Engineering, TIST conducted a Technical Forum on the topic “Holistic Development and the Role of Education” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasudev R on 14/10/2022. The session discussed the importance of Universal Human Values in education for developing a generation that considers the environment and its beneficiaries as part of technological development, thus achieving sustainable development.

 
Workshop on Building Information Modelling

A workshop on “Building Information modeling” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST under ASCE Student Chapter (Under Probation) from 13th July 2022 to 15th July 2022 in offline mode. The session was handled by Dr. Kishore P, Mr. Varun and Mr. Sam of Habilete Learning Solutions, Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Kishore P gave an insight into the key benefits of BIM and its application. All faculty and students of S6 CE and S4 CE attended the workshop. The program was highly beneficial to the students, as it focused on various aspects and dimensions of BIM.
