Association & Activities
The Civil Engineering Association (‘RACHANA’) at TIST, was established with a prime objective to proliferate knowledge & address industrial issues by bringing corporates, professors and students on a common platform. ‘RACHANA’, having students as well as faculty as its members is very active in the department. The association aims to promote Civil Engineering by providing the much-needed practical exposure to the community members through its regular activities like technical seminars, research symposium, FDP, talks on ongoing research practices throughout the globe and many other related topics from distinguished practitioners of the trade.
2025- 2026
From Rafters to Roofs – Learning the Art of Construction
The Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, organized an educational demonstration titled “From Rafters to Roofs – Learning the Art of Construction” on 19th January 2026 (Monday).
The program was conducted to provide hands-on exposure to roof construction practices, focusing on the identification and understanding of roof components, including rafters, purlins, trusses, and roofing materials. The live demonstration enabled students to observe real-time construction techniques and workmanship involved in traditional roofing systems.
This initiative helped students bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, enhancing their understanding of construction detailing and on-site execution. The department continues to emphasize experiential learning to strengthen industry-oriented civil engineering education.
Consultancy Details- January
During January 2026, the Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, provided consultancy and material testing services to various LSGD and LID & EW sections. The works included bitumen extraction tests and compressive strength tests on concrete cubes and paving tiles for different Grama Panchayats.
All tests were conducted as per standard testing procedures, and the results were submitted to the respective authorities. The consultancy activities supported quality assurance in public infrastructure works and strengthened the department’s technical engagement with local governing bodies.
Adani Cement FutureX Programme
The Adani Cement FutureX Programme was presented to Civil Engineering students on 20th January 2026 through an informative video session. The programme highlighted the cement manufacturing process, modern automation techniques, energy-efficient practices, and sustainability measures followed in cement plants.
The session also introduced students to career opportunities in the cement industry, particularly within the Adani Group, and showcased the FutureX programme as a platform to bridge academic learning with real industrial exposure.
FDP on Innovative Technologies for Sustainable and Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure
The Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science & Technology, Kochi organized a Six Days Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “Innovative Technologies for Sustainable and Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure” from 1st to 6th December 2025 in online mode. The FDP was inaugurated on 1st December 2025 by Dr. M. P. Ramnavas, Director (Projects), Kochi Metro Rail Ltd., Kerala, who also delivered the inaugural technical talk. The programme featured expert talks by eminent academicians and industry professionals from premier institutions including IITs, NIT Calicut, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd., CEB Sri Lanka, and leading research organizations. The sessions covered diverse themes such as sustainable urban transport systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, 3D concrete printing, sustainable pavements, forensic investigation of concrete structures, CO₂-treated recycled aggregates, eco-efficient materials, smart demolition techniques, housing and construction aligned with SDGs, and reinforced soil structures. The programme provided valuable insights into emerging technologies, encouraged research-oriented discussions, and enhanced faculty competencies in sustainable and disaster-resilient infrastructure practices. The programme was well received by participants and successfully met its academic and professional development objectives. The FDP was effectively coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Preetha Prabhakaran and Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu, and the Department extends sincere gratitude to the management, Principal, resource persons, and all faculty members of the department for their valuable support and cooperation.
Inter-Department Badminton Tournament
The ASCE Student Chapter of the Department of Civil Engineering, TIST, successfully organized an Inter-Department Badminton Tournament on 16th and 17th December 2025. The event aimed to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy inter-departmental interaction among students.
The tournament saw enthusiastic participation from students of various departments, with a total of 8 Men’s Doubles teams and 4 Women’s doubles teams competing. The matches were conducted in a lively and competitive spirit, supported by strong student volunteering from different departments.

The event was efficiently coordinated by the S8 and S6 ASCE student coordinators under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Vasudev R, Asst. Prof. Christy Francis Lonth, and Asst. Prof. Anue Marry Mathew, whose constant support and supervision ensured the smooth conduct of the tournament.
The Inter-Department Badminton Tournament 2025 was a resounding success, fostering healthy competition, leadership, teamwork, and social bonding among students. The smooth and fair conduct of the matches was ensured by the dedicated efforts of student referees Adithyan A (S8 SF), Emil Kurian Eldhos (S4 RA), Arjun P B (S4 EC), and Shivashankar (S4 ME). The ASCE Student Chapter extends sincere gratitude to all participants, volunteers, referees, and faculty members for their valuable support and cooperation.
Christmas celebration
The department celebrated Christmas with a Secret Santa gift exchange, promoting togetherness and festive cheer among faculty members.
Consultancy Details- December
During the month of December 2025, consultancy services were provided to various LSGD sections involving material testing works. Compression tests were conducted on concrete cubes and paving tiles for Assistant Engineers of Maneed GP, Pampakkuda GP, Thirumarady GP, and Mulanthuruthy BP on different dates. All tests were carried out following standard testing procedures, and the results were duly submitted to the respective authorities. The consultancy works were completed efficiently within the stipulated time, ensuring technical support and compliance with relevant standards.
Internship at IIIC Kollam
The S8 students Harinarayan S, Harikrishnan Shibu, Harigovind S, Alen Peter, and Dany R Georgesuccessfully completed an internship at Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) from 12 December 2025 to 03 January 2026, which included a structured training program at the Indian Institute of Infrastructure Construction (IIIC), Kollam. The internship provided practical exposure to infrastructure construction practices, with focused learning on safety standards, quality control procedures, project management concepts, and foundation works, particularly piling construction activities. Through classroom sessions and site visits, the students gained valuable insights into real-time construction processes, equipment usage, and professional work culture, contributing significantly to their technical and professional development.
CONSULTANCY DETAILS – NOVEMBER
In November, the department undertook a series of consultancy assignments for various LSGD sections, Panchayats, and individual clients. The works primarily comprised compression testing of paving tiles, concrete cubes, and mud bricks, along with a gradation assessment of aggregates for Kumbalanghi GP. Additionally, a stability evaluation of a water tank in Maneed GP was carried out for the Block Panchayat Office, Mulamthuruthy. These activities collectively supported quality assurance and infrastructure development initiatives across multiple local bodies during the month.
Inauguration of ‘RACHANA’ Activities 2025-26
The Civil Engineering Association Rachana inaugurated its activities for 2025–2026 on 15th September 2025 (Engineers’ Day) with Rev. Fr. Dr. Bennet Kuriakose, Dean (Research), St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Palai, as the Chief Guest. The event featured the annual report presentation, release of Sanskriti, Nirmana, and Civil Reflections magazines, prize distribution for academic toppers and competitions, and the investiture of new office bearers of Rachana and allied student chapters. In his inaugural address and technical session, Rev. Fr. Dr. Bennet Kuriakose emphasized the integration of AI and emerging technologies with structural design, discussed civil engineering challenges such as sustainability, cost, and safety, and presented case studies including innovative solutions like a floating home— inspiring participants to embrace innovation and sustainable practices for the future of construction.
Poster Making Competition
As part of Engineer’s Day Celebration, the Civil Engineering Association – RACHANA of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organized a Poster Making Competition on 9th September 2025, themed “Sustainable Engineering for a Greener Future.” The event aimed to encourage students to showcase their creativity and awareness of sustainability in engineering practices. The competition was open to all TIST students, with participation in teams of two members. The First Prize was awarded to Anu Ann Biju and Adhithya Babu of S1 ECE. The prize distribution was held on 15th September 2025 during the RACHANA Association Inauguration 2025-2026, marking a successful and inspiring celebration of Engineer’s Day.
“BLUE PRINT BLITZ” CAD challenge competition
The “Blue Print Blitz” CAD challenge competition was organised by the ASCE Student Chapter, TIST, on 12th September 2025 with enthusiastic participation from students across various semesters. The event provided a platform for showcasing creativity and technical skills in computer-aided design.
The prize distribution ceremony was held on 15th September 2025, during the inauguration of the Civil Engineering Association Rachana. The winners were:

INDUSTRIAL VISIT-B.TECH S1 CE
The Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, organized an industrial visit for B.Tech S1 Civil Engineering students on 24th September 2025 to a construction site at Kanjiramattom, Ernakulam, in collaboration with CIVICONS – Designers & Contractors.The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to real-time construction activities such as earthwork, foundation layout, and site supervision. Students gained valuable insights into field operations, safety measures, and quality control procedures while interacting with industry experts Mr. Sreehari K R and Ms. Amritha Anil.
The experience helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practices, enhancing students’ technical knowledge and understanding of civil engineering applications.The visit was coordinated and accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Justin Moses Selvamony, Asst. Prof. Jesna N M, and Asst. Prof. Keerthy Sabu.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT-B.TECH S3 CE
The Department of Civil Engineering organized a one-day Industrial Visit for B.TechS3 Civil Engineering students to the Pallivasal Hydroelectric Power Plant and Extension Unit, and Munnar, on Friday, 26th September 2025.
A total of 15 students participated in the visit, accompanied and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Vasudev R and Asst. Prof. Vidya Jose. The visit provided the students with valuable insights into the working of hydroelectric power generation, dam structure, turbine operation, and the extension unit setup. Students gained practical exposure to various aspects of power plant operation, water management, and civil engineering applications in energy infrastructure.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT-B.TECH S5 CE
The S5 Civil Engineering students of Toc H Institute of Science and Technology visited Goa from 24th September 2025 to 28th September 2025 as part of their academic curriculum. The visit was coordinated and accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Sangeetha S and Asst. Prof. Radhakrishnan. The primary objective of the industrial visit was to provide students with exposure to various infrastructural and construction developments in the region, thereby linking theoretical knowledge with practical applications. During the visit, students had the opportunity to observe different civil engineering projects, including coastal protection works, bridge structures, and modern architectural designs that reflect sustainable construction practices
CONSULTANCY WORK – SEPTEMBER 2025
During September 2025, several consultancy works were undertaken by Civil Engineering Department. On 22nd September, a Compression Test on paving tile was conducted for the Assistant Engineer, LID & EW section, Udayamperoor Grama Panchayat. On 24th September, two consultancy services were provided — a Stability Certificate of a building for Fr. Thomas K Elias, Correspondent, St. Mary’s Boys Home, Thalacode, Mulanthuruthy, and a Stability Certificate of Chimney in public crematorium for the Assistant Engineer, LID & EW section, Arookutty Grama Panchayat. On 27th September, three Compression Tests on paving tiles were carried out for the Assistant Engineer, LID & EW, Piravom Municipality (two tests) and Noyal Raju, Kanjirathinkal House, Meempara.

CONSULTANCY WORK –OCTOBER 2025
During October 2025, consultancy services were provided for various LSGD sections. On 08/10/2025, Compression Tests on concrete cubes were conducted for the Assistant Engineers of Pampakkuda BP and Amballoor GP sections, and on 21/10/2025, Compression Tests on paving tiles were carried out for the Assistant Engineers of Maneed GP and Mulanthuruthy BP sections.
Faculty Judges for Inter-School Competition “Anokha ’25” – Science Event Junkyard Genius
As part of the inter-school competition “Anokha ’25,” the Science event titled Junkyard Genius was successfully conducted with enthusiastic participation from various schools. The event was judged by Dr. Vasudev R and Dr. Justin Mosses Selvamony, faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering. Their expert evaluation and insightful feedback greatly contributed to the success of the event, ensuring a fair and encouraging platform for young innovators to showcase their creativity and scientific thinking.
Innovation Activity: Building Bridges Together
The Civil Engineering Department of TIST hosted “Innovation: Building Bridges Together” on 14th August 2025 for first-year Civil Engineering students. The creative bridge model-making challenge encouraged teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving while providing hands-on experience in applying engineering concepts. The best models were recognized, and prizes were awarded to the top three teams. The event turned out to be a day of learning, collaboration, and innovation for the budding civil engineers.
Quiz Competition
A Quiz for Civil Engineering Minds was organized on 18th August 2025 by the Rachana Civil Engineering Association at Amrutham Hall. The event aimed to encourage students to enhance their knowledge, improve their critical thinking skills, and develop a spirit of healthy competition. Several teams participated with great enthusiasm. After a closely contested battle of knowledge and quick thinking, Christo Jose and Vibha Vinod of S5 CE emerged as the winners.
Onam Celebration 2025
As part of Thakruthi Onam 2025 presented by the TIST Council, the Department of Civil Engineering organized Onam celebrations with great enthusiasm and festive spirit. The event included traditional rituals, cultural performances, and various activities that reflected the rich heritage of Kerala. Faculty, staff, and students actively participated, making the occasion vibrant and memorable.

Toc H School Students Visit to Civil Engineering Department
On 29th March 2025, students from Toc H Public School visited the Civil Engineering Department as part of an educational exposure program. The students explored various laboratories including model Lab, where they observed structural and construction models, and also the demonstration of Total Station survey. So the student gained hands-on insight into modern surveying techniques. The visit provided a valuable learning experience, sparking curiosity and interest in the field of civil engineering among the students.
Farewell
On 27th March 2025, the S6 Civil Engineering students organized a heartfelt farewell for the outgoing final year batch. The event was filled with warm memories, fun-filled moments and emotional goodbyes.
Cultural programs, games and speeches made the day memorable, as juniors expressed their gratitude and seniors shared their experiences. It was a touching send-off, celebrating the journey of the final years and wishing them success in all future endeavours.
TECHSHILA’25
TECHSHILA is the annual tech fest organized by the Department at TIST, providing a platform for budding Engineers to showcase their talents. TECHSHILA’25 was conducted on March 1, 2025, featuring a mix of technical and non-technical events. The official logo launch took place on February 27, 2025, in front of Aryabatta Block, marking the beginning of this exciting fest. The technical events like Escape Room, Problem Solving, CIVIQ, Marketing, Hackathon, and Webinars provided hands-on learning experiences for the students. For those interested in creativity and entertainment, TECHSHILA’25 hosted Photography, Neon Football, Carroms, Mehendi, PS5 Gaming, Pull-Up Challenge, and Reel It. These non-technical events encouraged artistic expression, strategic thinking, and fun engagement, making the fest enjoyable for all.
Cube Test Competition
Department conducted the most awaited Cubetest competition on 6thMarch 2025 as part of International Conference on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability (ICITES 2025) in association with ICI Kerala Kochi Student Chapter. The session was formally inaugurated by Dr. Vasudev R, Head of the Department, TIST and the judges were Er. Sumesh K M, Officer- Technical at Ambuja Cements Ltd. and Dr. Justin Moses Selvamony, Professor, TIST.Around 18 teams from various Engineering colleges activelyparticipated in the event.
Bridge It: National-Level Hackathon
Department successfully hosted national-level hackathon “Bridge It”, a truss bridge making competition as part of TECHSHILA ’25 on February 1, 2025.Prof. Katta Venkataramana, NIT Karnataka graced the event, by sharing his valuable insights into Structural Engineering. His presence added immense value, inspiring participants with his expertise and practical knowledge in the field.The winning team comprised Gervasis Geo, Arjun Babu, and Basil Shaji from Electrical Engineering, and Ann Maria P.X from Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Their design stood out for its innovative approach and structural integrity.The competition provided hands-on learning, reinforcing engineering principles in a practical setting and the overwhelming participation and enthusiasm highlighted the success of “Bridge It” hackathon.



Webinar series on “Leadership in the Digital Era”
ASCE Student Chapter organised online webinar series on “Leadership in the Digital Era” as part of National TechFest – TECHSHILA ’25 from 29thto 31stJanuary 2025. The three-day series focused on essential skills for engineers, entrepreneurship, and technological advancements shaping leadership. On Day 1, Sreehari P, MRICS, Associate Director at Lambsrock Consulting shared his thoughts on “Organizational Behavior Skills for Engineers in the Digital Era”, provided insights into leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and emotional intelligence. He highlighted the importance of adaptability and self-discipline in navigating the fast-evolving digital landscape. On the second day, Vivek Prakasam, Principal Architect and Co-founder of Foxgreen Consulting LLP, shared his transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship through the topic “Daring to Dream – The Mindset of an Entrepreneur”.
He emphasized the courage, resilience, and vision required to build a successful business, motivating students to explore their entrepreneurial potential. Parvathy Neelakandan, PhD Scholar at IIT Madras was the speaker of day3. She featured “Machine Learning – Transforming Leadership through the Future” by introducing the fundamentals of machine learning and its role in leadership and decision-making. The webinar provided valuable industry insights, entrepreneurial strategies, and technological advancements, equipping students with the skills to thrive as future leaders.



Industrial visit to METCON Steel Manufacturing plant @ Muvattupuzha
Department organized an Industrial visit for Second year and Final year B Tech students to METCON Steel Manufacturing unitat Muvattupuzha on 22/01/2025. The visit provided valuable insights into the operation of the manufacturing of TMT bars. During the site visit, the efficient production and the quality checks before and after the productionof TMT bars of various diameters was observed. Additionally, they demonstrated the production from scrap to final stage along with strong environmental responsibility, waste recycling and emission control systems
IDEATHON 2024-2025
An Ideathon 2024-25competition were conducted for high school and higher secondary students on 1st November 2024.The competition aimed to encourage school students to improve their critical thinking, teamwork and development of practical solutions to real-world problems.Competition was under two categoryviz.,Category 1 for high school students and Category 2 is for higher secondary students. For category 1 the theme was ‘Waste to Product’ and for Category 2, the theme was ‘Smart Water Conservation’.30 teams of students from 15 schools participated in the idea challenge competition. Each team presented their ideas in the given themeeach of them were given participation certificates. For Best Idea, Certificates and Cash price worth Rs.10,000 were awarded in each Category.
INTER DEPARTMENT BADMINTON TOURNAMENT
ASCE student chapter of Department of Civil Engineering TIST organized Inter Department Badminton tournament from 28thto 29thOctober 2024. Students from various departments participated for the event. Safety and Fire Department won Men’s doubles and Computer Science Department won Women’s Doubles. Department of Civil Engineering were the runners up in both Men’s and Women’s Doubles. S7, S5 ASCE student coordinators along with Prof. Dr. Vasudev R, Asst. Prof. Anue Marry Mathew and Asst. Prof. Christy Francis Lonth coordinated the event. The tournament was a resounding success, fostering teamwork, healthy competition, and social interaction among participants
Paper Tower Challenge
The Paper Tower Challenge took place on October 26, 2024, in honor of World Students’ Day at Amrutham Hall, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration withIIC. This exciting event featured 19 teams from various parts of India, all composed of enthusiastic students eager to demonstrate their creativity and engineering abilities.The first prize was awarded to the talented team of Abijith Manoharan, Jince Manoj, and Abhay Abraham from the Mechanical Department, TIST., and the second prize was secured by another proficient team comprising Abhinandh Haridas, Sanila AV, and Sanika CS from MGM College of Engineering and Technology.The Paper Tower Challenge not only promoted a spirit of competition but also encouraged collaboration and problem-solving techniques among students, making it a memorable highlight of the academic calendar.
Site Visit to Pallivasal Power Plant and Extension Unit
S3 students along with faculty members visited Pallivasal power plant and extension unit on 5th October 2024 as part of their curriculum under ASCE student chapter. The Pallivasal Plant is a run-of-river type hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 37.5 MW. Executive Engineer Biju K, Surge, Penstoke& Power House Division, KSEBL, Meencut has explained the design, construction, and operation of the power plant and also the construction details of extension unit.The visit to Power Plant and extension unit provided valuable practical experience and students gained knowledge on various civil engineering aspects and appreciated the importance of safety measures.HOD, Prof. Dr. Vasudev R and Asst. Prof. Anue Marry Mathew accompanied the students.
Industrial Visit to Kerala Engineering Research Institute and Peechi Dam
Department organized an industrial visit for first and fifth semester students to the Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI) and Peechi Dam, Thrissur, on October 5, 2024. Students explored KERI’s invaluable services in investigation, testing, hydraulic model studies, consultancy etc in Civil and Water Resources Engineering.During the visit, students engaged with the Construction Materials and Foundation Engineering division, which operates under the Director of Fundamental and Applied Research. The visit to Peechi Dam provided practical insights into dam construction and management, enhancing students’ understanding of key concepts in their curriculum and fostering a deeper appreciation for real-world applications in their fields of study.
Inauguration of ‘RACHANA’ Activities 2024-25
On 30th September 2024 the Inauguration of Civil Engineering association ‘Rachana’ activities for the year 2024-25was held at Amrutham Hall. Er. Abhilash Joy, Managing Director, STUBA Engineering consultancy, Cochin was the chief guest. Civil engineering magazines, SANSKRITI, NIRMANA & Civil Reflections of the year 2023-24 were released. The activities of 2023-2024 were also presented by the HOD, Dr. Vasudev R. Investiture ceremony for the office bearers of various chapters ASCE, ICI, IGBC and Rachanaof the department was conducted. A technical sessionwas also organized by Er. Abhilash Joy after the inauguration.
Engineers Day Celebration
The Engineer’s Day was celebrated on September 27, 2024 with various events. The event commenced with a seminar on ‘Innovations in Engineering’, by final-year students. This was followed by the ‘Tech Buzz’ quiz competition, attracting four teams from each year. Winners received cash prizes and certificates. The event garnered positive feedback, with students praising the informative seminar and engaging quiz. This celebration fostered an enriching experience, inspiring innovation and excellence in Engineering.
Talk on Ozone Layer Conservation
Department conducted a session on importance of Ozone layer conservation at St. Ignatius HSS Kanjiramattom on 22nd August 2024 for Eighth grade students. The session was conducted by final year students along with Asst. Prof. Archana C P & Asst. Prof. Christy Francis Lonth. The talk was basically on the theme “ozone for life”. It included the importance of ozone layer, causes of depletion of ozone layer and the precautions that can be taken to protect the ozone layer. A quiz competition was also conducted after the session.

World Environment Day
As part of the World Environment Day 2024, department have initiated Indoor plant decor and Organic farm in the department. Indoor plant decor enhances aesthetic appeal while improving air quality and promoting well-being. Organic farming promotes environmental sustainability, healthier soil, and reduces exposure to synthetic chemicals. Together we can make our campus greener and healthier place.

Student Paper Presentation “Blueprints of Progress” was organised by ASCE Student Chapter, TIST on 24thApril 2024 at Amrutham Hall. In this event final year projects were presented and evaluated byHOD, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasudev R and Prof. Dr. Justin Moses Selvamony, Project in charge Asst. Prof. Annie Sonia Xavier. Project guides and pre final year students were attended.
Alumni Meet 2024
An online alumni meet was conducted on 14th April 2024 in association with ASCE Student Chapter. Ms. Veena Biju, Vice-president, ASCE welcomed all to the meet. Dr. Sahila Beegam was congratulated on her new position as a Research Assistant Professor at Nebraska Water Center, University of Nebraska Lincoln. Er. Rohan Kurien shared a video describing his college life and the challenges faced during the setting up of his company Tenacity Builders and Designers. Visit to Matter Lab, Calicut
B Tech final year and MTech students along with faculty members visited Matter Laboratory at Calicut on March 6, 2024. The lab showcased material testing, inspection, and consultancy services. The visit provided practical insights into quality assurance processes and industry best practices. Participants engaged with experts, gaining valuable experiential knowledge. This visit was a valuable experience for students who can visualize a construction environment and real-world practices.
Building Green Futures: Plastic Reuse in Construction
Department in partnership with IIC, marked Science Day on February 28, 2024, at St. George High School. Dr. Vasudev R led a seminar titled “Building Green Futures: Plastic Reuse in Construction,” spotlighting plastic’s environmental potential. Students delved into innovative projects using recycled plastics, igniting enthusiasm for sustainable building practices. The event concluded with a resounding call to action, inspiring students to spearhead eco-friendly initiatives and steer construction towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Site Visit to Perumbalam-Panavally Bridge
Site Visit to Perumbalam-Panavally Bridge,Alappuzha District was conducted on 25/01/2024as part of CSIR sponsored workshop on “Emerging Trends in Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure”. The bridge links Perumbalam and Vaduthala at Arookutty village in Alleppey District. The construction of the bridge was a long pending demand of the people of Perumbalam, the only island grama panchayat in Alappuzha. The bridge will make travel hassle-free for around 15,000 islanders who currently use boats to commute between their village and the mainland. The work is being carried out by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. Er. Adarsh M explained about the technical aspects of the project in brief and the safety measures to be taken at the site during the visit. The participants also had an opportunity to observe the reinforcement details of some elements of a bridge. The concept of weep holes, pitching was explained in detail. The challenges faced during the construction work and the methods to overcome were also discussed.

Industrial visit to Malankara Dam
B Tech final year and third year students along with faculty members of the department visited Malankara dam, Idukki on 04th November 2023. Students visited the the gallery of the dam and experienced procedures of opening of shutter. Shamila Kasim, Assistant Engineer explained the functioning of the dam and gallery leachate. The activities of Civil Engineering association ‘RACHANA’ for the academic year 2023-2024 was inaugurated on 26th October, 2023. Industrial Visit
All B Tech, M Tech Students and faculties of Department of Civil Engineering in association with ASCE and ICI visited JNNURM Water Treatment Plant at Maradu on 26/09/2023 as part of Engineers Day 2023 celebration. Asst. Engineer Thasneem, KWA explained the procedure of intake of water from source and treatment procedure at the plant to the students. This experience enhanced their understanding of water treatment and management, making the visit highly educational and enriching.

MATTER LABORATORY VISIT
To cultivate strong links with Industry and Institute the Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology in association with IIC organized an interaction program with Matter Lab at Calicut on 21/2/2023. Matter laboratory was well equipped with a group of Engineers and Technical Professionals committed to providing best-in-class Engineering & Technical solutions across the region for construction and other industries through material testing, inspection, and consultancy services. Activities of the Matter laboratory include a wide range of construction materials testing, chemical analysis & microbiological examination of water, food, & food products, environmental testing, metallurgical testing, non-destructive concrete testing, and forensic investigation of concrete structures. Faculty members and final year B Tech and M Tech students had a fruitful session with experts. This will promote various industrial activities by the faculty members and students in association with Industries in the future


JEEVAJALAM – Installation of Bird Water Feeder in TIST Campus
Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science and Technology celebrated World Water Day, 22nd March 2023 by installing bird water feeders “Jeevajalam” at TIST campus. This activity aimed to reaffirm our commitment to the conservation and sustainable management of water resources for both people and nature and also to raise awareness about the value of fresh water and a call for the wise use of freshwater resources. HOD, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasudev R inaugurated the installation with a talk on the importance of World Water Day. Faculty members and students attended.


Concrete Cube Test Competition
Concrete Cube Test Competition was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on 4th April 2023 as part of International Conference on Innovative Trends in Engineering for Sustainability, ICITES 2023. Dr. Vasudev R, HOD inaugurated the competition, and the judges were Er. Krishnanunni Nair and Mr. Sumesh Murukan from Ambuja Cements Ltd. Around 40 teams from various Engineering Colleges across India participated in the competition. The team from the College of Engineering, Kidangoor secured first prize with a cash award of Rs.10000, and the team from Ilahia College of Engineering and Technology secured second prize with a cash award of Rs.5000. Winners will be honored during the International Conference inaugurated on 11th April 2023.

SITE VISIT TO CHELLANAM SEA WALL
S3 and S5 students of Department of Civil Engineering, TIST visitedChellanamSea Wall construction site on 3rd December 2022. The newly installed tetrapod-based seawall seems to have brought much-needed relief to the residents of sea erosion-prone area, Chellanam in Ernakulam district. Areas, which used to get flooded by the ferocious waves over the last many years, remain more or less protected during monsoon intensification. The construction of sea wall using tetrapod seemed to have helped to secure the stretch between Chellanamharbour and Puthanthodu from the threat of sea erosion. Dr P V Chandramohan, PresidentTechnical, NavayugaEngineeringCompanyLtd. shared his experience in tetrapod sea wall construction. Asst. Prof. SahimolEldhose and Asst. Prof. Chithra C J accompanied the students.


Inauguration of RACHANA activities of the year 2022-23
Inauguration of association activities ‘RACHANA’of the year 2022-23 was held on 2nd December 2022 at Amrutham Hall of Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. D. D. Ebenezer, Retired Director (Systems), Naval Physical and Oceanographic Lab., DRDO, Kochiinaugurated the function. The programme started with an invocation and welcome address by Ms. Diya Monica, Secretary of RACHANA. Dr. Alexander Mathew, President, Toc H Public School Society delivered Presidential address. A detailed report on RACHANA activities 2021-22 was presented by HOD, Assoc. Prof. Dr.Vasudev R. A motivational address was delivered by Dr. K Varghese, Founder, Director & Manager, Toc H Public School Society. The duties and responsibilities of the office bearers of Civil Association, ICI student chapter, IGBC student chapter, and ASCE student chapter was handed over by an Investiture ceremony. Er. C S Varghese, Secretary, Toc H Public School Society, Mr. K K Mathew, Treasurer, Toc H Public School Society &Prof. (Dr.) Preethi Thekkath, Principal, TIST felicitated the event. Department Technical Magazine “Sanskriti” and Newsletter “Nirmana” was released by the chief guest in presence of delegates. A Detailed Project Report on the design of a new block for the MITHRAM special school named “Thanal”, was submitted to the school authorities by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Preethi Thekkath. Awards were distributed to the winners of the badminton championship conducted under ASCE Student Chapter (Under Probation). The session was concluded by vote of thanks by Mr. Jithin Ratheesh, Joint secretary, RACHANA.


Inter-Department Badminton Championship
Department of Civil Engineering, TIST organized an Inter-department Badminton Championship at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, TIST from 21st to 23rd November 2022 under ASCE Student Chapter under Probation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasudev R, HOD inaugurated the event and extended his full support to the students. The champions were Mr. Xavier Johnson & Mr. Alan George K J from Mechanical Engineering Department under Men’scategory and Ms. Saina Z & Ms.Revathy Pradeep from Computer Science Engineering Department under Women’s Categoryalso Mr.Athul Krishna & Mr. Alen Peter (CE department) from Men’s category and Ms. MariyaSaji& Ms. Aiswarya Saju (ECE Department) were the Runners up. The winners were awarded ever rolling trophy, cash award and the runners-up received individual trophies and certificates during the Civil Engineering Association inauguration ceremony. World Ozone Day Celebration, 2022
World Ozone Day, 2022 was celebrated by the Department of Civil Engineering, Toc H Institute of Science & Technology on September 16, 2022. The theme for the current year declared by the UN Environment Programme was“Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth”.A photography contest was organized by the department in association with IIC and IEDC, TISTas is part of the celebration. The contest aimed to protect life on earth and to eliminate the production and consumption of substances that can deplete the ozone layer. The winners of the contest were Ms. Veena Biju, S3 CE, TIST, and Ms. Tania Breen, IXth Std. St. Philomena’s Public School.
